want cake, want to eat it too, not want to pay for cake.

You're going to have trouble finding all that you want for $5-10 a month and still get good reliable service.

TPMG is using 1and1.com. About $30 each quarter. Reminds me I need to send Dan the bill :)

If you're building a site that will get a lot of traffic throughout the day, I would not recommend Dreamhost based on our experience with them. If you're getting some traffic here and there, they might be fine.

We used to use them and it was a nightmare. I recall a few years ago the day before Luminato, TPMG was dead in the water. Getting support from them? Good luck. We'd get an email back alright but with no ETA on when the service was up. And we had some extended outages that would last for a day or more. Unacceptable, we can probably put up with short downtime here and there but not this.

Yes granted that paying $10/month will not get you 99.99% uptime, unless you start shelling out big bucks, but the uptime of Dreamhost left a lot to be desired and we moved over to 1and1. We did have one or two hiccups but the downtime wasn't long at least then we had that Error 500 which came and went but nothing as big as the problems we had with Dreamhost.

But for the cost, I think both were the same and I'd put my money on 1and1.

1and1 is a good choice, so is ipower. My corporate websites are hosted by those two. A 1and1 package offers hosting for 3 websites, and it has after hour tech support which is routed to southeast asia. The people there have good manners and speak decent english.

My personal websites are hosted by bottomline (bottomlinecom.net). Their prices are cheaper than 1and1, about $35 a year. It's a relative small company so you dont get everything that you get from 1and1, but you get faster responses and more technical answers. Their control panel offers more freedom on web development if you want to write your own code.

Cheers,

nobody beats http://www.lunarpages.com IMO. Been with them for almost 10 years and I host multiple sites with them, great customer service and you can talk to live people on the phone anytime you have an inquiry. Competitive prices too.

I've used 1and1 for 5 years now and have had no problems. They're inexpensive and reliable.

I haven't had an issues with godaddy or dreamhost, actually I'm lying, sometimes I find my site a little slow to load but I think that's just me because my friends (who are also with Dreamhost) don't have an issue.

nearlyfreespeech.net - can't really give you any in-depth experiences about them as i signed on recently myself, but hey, it's cheap.

I use Netfirms.ca
-250GB Space
-2,000 GB Transfer
-2 Free Domain Names (includes .ca / .com / .net / .me / others)
-Some free design software
-$12.95/month (Paid Annually) - Sale ends August 31 = $9.95/month

Only the odd time (Maybe 1 every 2 month does my site go down for a few hours or shorter time)

The best in my opinion is canaca.ca located in mississauga.

here is their base package...

500 GB storage space
2000 GB file transfer
Host 50 Web Sites
5000 email accounts
so much more... check it out

$3.95 per month US

I dealt with CANACA and NETFIRMS, didn't like it.
I use BLUEHOST for all my hosting and domain needs, several plans, up-to-date server technology, one click button install for mysql databases, forums, galleries etc, $50 credit towards adwords or yahoo services, 99.9% up-time, full reliability and easy to transfer .CA domains.

they have different packages, I'm happy with the service and ease of the cpanel.

worth to check it out.

BTW, if anybody is going to go with 1and1, use the below link. Any new customers they get through this link, TPMG will benefit, ie.: we'll recover the cost of the hosting.

http://imts.einsundeins.com/imts?i1334v ... d=13429796

Of course it's entirely up to you if you wish to use this or not.

I was with Caneca.

There was a little too much downtime. I had emails bounce and ended up being suspended on some email lists.

Then I advised that I needed PHP 5, and their tech people said it was not available and there was no timetable for an upgrade. PHP 5 has been out 2+ years.

When I cancelled, sales said "but we can give you PHP 5". I referred them to the trouble tickets.

i still not sure...lots of sites boast 200gb or 500gb space but i've heard that some hosts will stop service if A) you use more than 10% of cpu resources, B) have too many files like photos,so technically you cant even use the whole 500gb.

1and1 looks pretty good, if i do end up going with them i'll use the link tanner

1and1 has a limit in both total size and total number of files. Same with the database though you're allowed to have up to four databases.

canadianwebhosting.com

Basic, prepaid 1 yr > $4.95/month
10Gb bandwidth
500 Mb space
1 domain

Value plan, $9.95/monthly
1000Gb bandwidth
125G space
unlimited domain

I'm using it and have no trouble so far. Good luck.

I am with Canaca, I won't recommend them. Like previous posts, quite a few downtime per month. My basic html site got hacked and they told me it is my fault. Denied everything. Then they simply billed my account a couple of times too many...

I'll do that once my Canaca contract is up
