So, as an update for 2013 Toronto, what's a good place to print photos from digital?
TIW seems quite expensive at $5.50 for 12x18

Looking at 8x12 and higher
gloss or matte?

I've only compared 44 Wide and TIW, printed chromogenic and inkjet at TIW, 44 Wide only does inkjet. I prefer chromogenic on matte. Chromogenic, to my eye, gives better results when you're stretching lower res photo to 150% plus. If you set your computer up for their bulk printing it's not too bad, but I agree that place is on the expensive side. I print at 22" x 33" and up and I'd rather just pay the money to ensure the quality and piece of mind. I'm not looking to print dozens of photos and I consider the ones I do print an investment anyways.

For anyone reading this, when Bartimus refers to "lower res photo" he means 36MP.

 It's low res for large printing. 36mpx at 300 DPI will only give you 16.4" X 24.5". At 22" x 33" you're already at 130% or so stretch. This is why most photographers who print large still shoot medium and large format. 4 x 5 film will get you in the high 20's and 8 x 10 film will get you in the 40-50+ inch range (at 300dpi). Assuming you're scanning at around 2000dpi. My math is terrible but I'm pretty sure I'm close. With the hassles involved in shooting film, I think it makes more sense to just stitch two high mpx photos together (at least in my case).

I guess at the end of the day it depends on how picky you are. I want to be able to be a foot away from the photo and still be happy with it. It's nice to look at the little details in a photo, ones you don't even notice on your computer screen sometimes.

I have been using Pikto for years now.... the best deal there is when you do the workstation printing, as working off of their Mac and seeing your images in the printer profile is a big help. I want to try their new Chromira printer - they just installed it a few months ago. But I haven't really had anything to print up until now. I have a few projects coming up, and I'll need to do some prints there.

If you have a wack of stuff to print, the workstation is usually free for the hour, and 8x10 / 8x12's are around $3 each.
