Details:

What: Cannington Dog Sled Races
When: Sat. Jan. 28 (Reschedule to Sun. Jan. 29 if driving conditions are bad)
Time: 9:45 am
Where: Cannington, Ontario - Community Centre Entrance
Bring: Camera, Winter Clothing

http://www.canningtondogsledraces.com/index.html

This will have to be weather dependent. I have gone twice before, and the races have been cancelled due to lack of snow or icy conditions (a thaw in the previous couple of weeks). If the event is cancelled, it will be posted on their website, which I will check. I will also cancel or postpone to the Sunday if the road conditions are likely to be bad for driving there.
In addition to the races, there is a "winter festival".
Previous Years:

2009: Races were cancelled, but I still went for the "winter carnival"

2010: http://www.flickr.com/photos/janetliz/s ... 488867001/

2011: Races were cancelled

I prefer Sunday so I have placed myself in that list. I am technically a maybe.

I used to enjoy photographing the sled races at Cold Creek many moons ago when we still received snow in the winter and Cold Creek was an operating conservation area. I went to MInden a couple of times for their races, but they ran into the lack of snow problem and had to start cancelling. Cannington seems a little out of the snow belt, but I have my fingers crossed for a white winter (at least north of hwy 7)!

I would prefer the Sunday as well since I may be unavailable for the Saturday due to a Charity Event I have to attend (unfortunately) I'm definately a "Maybe" if I can get out of it!!!

I just looked at the 14 day forecast for Cannington, and it doesn't look promising. It is showing 4 days of above freezing weather this coming weekend, including +7 on Monday, which will likely eliminate any snow they have now, and only a few flurries on the Wed., Fri. and Saturday. I am still keeping my fingers crossed, since forecasts can change, but I am not optimistic.

Failing the dog sled races... If they do indeed get cancelled. Would anyone be interested in a trek up to Haliburton? I want to go to the wolf centre in HFWR.

If we do get the races, can we do Haliburton on a different weekend?

If the races do get cancelled - I'd prefer to go to Haliburton on the Saturday - because its a long 1 day drive. That way I can have Sunday to rest.

I would agree with Saturday as well. I just wanted to keep Sunday as an option if the weather and roads were bad.

Keep an eye on the thread. I will check the Cannington website frequently and will post if/when the races get cancelled, in which case it looks like we will be doing Haliburton. If I can, I will change the thread title as well.

It would be cleaner to cancel out this event and post a fresh event if you are switching to Halliburton.

We can also just edit this and re-label as a Haliburton trip.

Perhaps if we do that, we should ask people to confirm their attendance after the change?

If/when we do change it, will you post the details for Haliburton?

yup... I can - but first lets see how things turn out over the next week -- maybe today's snow is a good sign!

I'm interested in Haliburton if the dog sledding doesn't work out.

Last year, I seem to remember them waiting until the Friday to announce that the races would be cancelled; however, there seemed to be more hope last year.

I sent an email to the "Contact Us" link on the website, and got back the response that the races have been CANCELLED.

Hi Janet

You should have this moved to the aftermath index and out of the event area.
