A good friend of mine had a very unfortunate mishap relating to digital photography. Him and his wife went on their honeymoon to Europe for three weeks. They captured many invaluable (to them) moments using their digital camera. About two and and a half weeks into the trip they noticed that they were no longer able to preview the images on the LCD of the camera. It appeared that all of the images were lost. They were obviously distraught and sought the assistance of a "computer guru" while on their travels and he attempted to mount the card in his computer with no success.

Once they returned to Canada my friend contacted me and explained the situation. I told him to not use the card any further and bring it to me as soon as possible. I was not able to mount the card in my computer or by connecting their camera with the card in it. I then used a piece of software that is available from Lexar called "Image Rescue 4" which was able to "see" the photos on the card even though it would not "mount" as a browsable device on the computer. 98% of the photos were recovered. The price for the software was $34 and well worth it to my friend. It works with all brands of cards, not just Lexar.

I don't work for Lexar nor am I sponsored in anyway, shape or form. I am merely sharing my success story with you in case you or someone you know needs this type of assistance.

I asked my friend if he normally formats the card after moving the photos to his computer or if he uses the delete key on the camera to delete them one by one as needed. He said that he deletes them one by one. I suggested that from now on he format the card (from within the camera functions) after successfully moving photos from the card to the computer as this would do a much better job at maintaining the file structure of the card.

*Moderators, please feel free to move this thread to another section if I have placed it improperly.*

There's also Data Rescue 3. It has saved my life twice. Once when I dropped my laptop and the HD failed. It was able to rebuild the entire harddrive and recover everything (except my work files how funny eh?) thankfully that wasn't as important as my photography :p.

Another time I accidentally formatted an xD card in my camera thinking I had already downloaded my friend's first vacation with her daughter. Data rescue was able to find every photo AND photos from someone else's trip I had lent the camera to 3 years ago

+1 Image Rescue is a great little program - not magic but it works as advertised.
