Details:

What: Meteor shower and star trails
When: Saturday August 13th 2011
Time: 3 PM
Where: Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Reserve
Bring: -- Blanket, maybe a pillow, lawn chair
-- bug repellant
-- camera capable of taking time exposures
-- cable release
-- tripod
-- extra batteries
-- binoculars for stargazing, if you have 'em
-- red flashlight (if you have a white flashlight, put some red plastic over it. A Skittles wrapper works reasonably well)
-- Bug Repellant
-- Toilet paper
-- Food for a supper time picnic
-- snacks for star gazing

Some information and directions are available here
http://www.rasc.ca/lpa/torrancebarrens.shtml

A group of us did this last years ago and had a good time.
Thought I would start a little earlier as there is lots to
shoot here even in the day time and there are some marked
hiking trails around some small lakes.

For your convenience I have arranged for...

1 -- The sun to set at 8:27 PM
2 -- A meteor shower called the Perseid during the night

Tim

If you want an inexpensive red light useful for making adjustments to your camera and finding your way around your tripod legs at night I suggest the MEC Turtle Red LED Light for only $3.75. I have two that I keep in my camera bag just for night stuff.

Make sure you get the Turtle Light with the red light as MEC has a number of turtle lights which are white lamps but have red bodies.

http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_deta ... 4302889375

For a couple of bucks more you can get a strap that will let you wear the turtle light as a headlamp to free up your hands (or mouth where most flashlights end up when your hands are working)!

http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_deta ... 4302889376

And in case any one new to the scene is wondering red lights have less affect on your night vision and are less likely to interfere with other photographers who are shooting.

Hey Simon

One is for day bugs and the other is for night bugs. Big, hungry, aggressive night bugs!

If you don't have enough bug spray, it doesn't matter how much camera equipment you have, you just won,t get the shot :)

Also there will be a full moon that night which might make star trails a little more difficult to shoot, but may make for some nice moonlight landscapes.

Hello Ruff

"Access to the Torrance Barrens is off District Road 13 (Southwood Road). If you are coming north on Highway 11, turn west onto District Road 13 (between Gravenhurst and Washago), then drive about 20 minutes until you see the brown Torrance Barrens sign on your right. Parking is in the area to the left of the sign. An alternate route is to turn south onto District Road 13 from the village of Torrance on view the larger map here"

I quoted the above from the link Provided by the organizer TIM
Which can be also found here
http://www.rasc.ca/lpa/torrancebarrens.shtml

cheers

I'd like to go this year, I was planning to go last year but I had a family emergency.

Can anyone spare two seats? My fiancee is wanting to get into photography and i'd like to bring her along. :)

Thank you. :)
