Hi all,

I'm trying to help a friend of mine find a used dslr.
She has taken some photos in the past but for all intents and purposes she's a beginner.

I stopped following developments in the camera world years ago ever since I got my Nikon D200 so I'm at a bit of a loss on my recommendations.

Some requirements:
1. Body: Nikon
2. Manual controls are accessed through dials as opposed to sub menus like on a D3100. I want to encourage her to shoot in manual, aperture priority etc and I know that having to change shutter and aperture through a menu/sub menu can be tedious and thus a barrier.
3. Price: I'd say 500 and less for a body.
4. Movie vs no movie mode is irrelevant.

I'm thinking that a D90 would be a good camera. It's about 2-3 years old so it should have fairly good features and still perform quite well. Especially for a beginner.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!
Zeekid

Yeah, I would say a D90 or a 40D

D90 is a good bet. The range just above the entry level cameras gives you a lot of features to learn on before you go to the upper or pro levels.

I have a D80 with Nikon battery grip, both in great condition, i don't use anymore if you are looking for something cheaper than $500. :)
