I think it's a bit dramatic to say he risked his life. I'd suggest Paul Nicklen is a better example with amazing photographs as a result. As far as I'm concerned, any time spent in close company of polar bears and leopard seals is risking one's life. He was on CBC last summer and the story he told had me in stitches. Here's a brief Youtube bit on the encounter Nicklen on leopard seals

That was my first reaction as well. until I realised he could very easily slip and fall and break or concuss something and be miles away from any help. But the choice to do so alone is his so I'd say he's more foolhardy or risk taking than brave. But I suppose there are electronic gizmos he can bring to alert anyone that might care that he is in dire need of help.

Even this past weekend me and 6 other TPMG'ers were in a gorge taking photos of a waterfalls when a low lying thunderstorm passed overhead rather quickly. I was trying to get off as many shots as I could before I sought the safety of drier location when I saw lightning overhead. here I was standing next to a metalic tripod. Was I risking life to get a few shots? perhaps . But if tragedy had struck I am sure most would interpret that as stupidity. So yes i was 'risking my life' but I do admit it was a foolish risk to take.

#15 of Paul's Polar bear set is the reason that most arctic helicopter pilots carry high power rifles in their emergency kit. I have firsthand experience that polar bears carry a huge grudge when it comes to helicopters.
