Hey, I am planning on doing a small photoshoot for a friend who wants pictures to send to her family back home and I was thinking of using the Toronto harbourfront area for the shoot.

I'll likely be setting up one softbox and perhaps a second light on a stand.

Was just curious if I need any special permit or permission to shoot around there? Does anyone have any experience doing this kind of thing?

I don't think you need a permit to shoot around Harbourfront. Just be ready to pack up and go if you get hassled by security. Ask Shayne, he just did a shoot there last Saturday :D

Great, thanks! Now the question is where is the best spot to get a nice view of the sunset and the lake?

If you're thinking of getting the sunset over the lake horizon, that's not possible with the geographical location of Toronto(Harbourfront), you can try heading to Toronto Island or Cherry Beach for the sunset over the city horizon.

Thanks for the mention Alvin!

About the sunset - right there at the outdoor theatre location are a few spots where you can shoot west over the water with the boats. Maybe you can catch the sunset, I'm not sure - we were shooting mid-day.

And as for security, we were even shooting there just as the Zero Gravity/Circus Fest was getting setup. We were in there with the umbrella, reflector and a 5-person team for a loooooooong time before we were approached. And if anyone hassles you...you just say ok, sorry and move to another spot there at the Harbourfront - it's definitely big enough....

Good luck and send us a link when you're done!

I've been looking for a spot in Toronto where the sun sets on the water but havent been able to find one. Are you saying there is a specific spot where this happens? Please detail!!! I've been scouring all around. All i can get is sun setting over land or buildings.

If you wait until November/Dec you'll get your chance of the sun setting on western end of Lake Ontario.

End of Cherry beach or Nudist beach on Islands (Gibraltar or something), but you will get a tiny strip of land on the horizon

I only assumed, but again...I was there mid-day, so...by the sounds of what the others are saying, looks like it's not the case!

It is officially a "Clothing Optional Beach", not nudist beach.

Thanks for all the advice, I will definitely give it a try and post the results...

Shayne, I love your works. It's amazing you've only been doing this less than a year. Definitely gives me inspiration to get better !
