Details:

What: Explore the Humber Arboretum
When: Friday June 3, 2011
Time: 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Where: Meet in Parking Lot 1 near the driveway loop
Bring: Yer gear, think flowers (maybe deer)

DATE CHANGED TO JUNE 3rd.

I have never seen an event posted to the Humber Arboretum and I thought it might be worth scouting. The area includes both natural and prepared gardens. In the valley by the Humber River there is deer and other wildlife. Info can be found here: http://www.humberarboretum.on.ca/index.html

And from Simon: http://www.humberarboretum.on.ca/Humber ... %20Map.pdf

If we start at 6:00 PM we will have almost 3 hours of light before the sun sets around 8:50 PM.

Parking is available at Humber Collage (free after 3:00PM). To access the parking drive to Humber Collage (HWY 27 and Humber Collage Blvd.).

From Humber Collage Blvd. turn into the driveway at the south end of the Collage (Entrance A) for Parking Lot 1. Follow this driveway straight through the gatehouse and past the residences. You will see entrances for Parking Lot 1, but follow the road right to the Arboretum loop then just past the loop is an entrance on the right into Parking Lot 1. Turn in and park.
Parking Map: http://www.humber.ca/sites/www.humber.c ... ng-map.pdf

The collage is transit accessible.
TTC Connections:
191 Highway 27 express from Kipling Station - Bloor-Danforth Subway
96 Wilson Express from Wilson Station - Yonge-University Subway
36 Finch West Bus from Finch Station - Yonge-University Subway

Car pooling/rides may still be desirable for after the event so if you can offer rides to or from the event let people know and if you would like a ride back into the city post it.

If there is a desire for a late snack we can discuss and pick a place during the event.

Rain is in the forecast for this Friday. I have reschedule to the following Friday June 3rd.

Hey Simon

Afraid of a little walk from Lakeshore?

Yeah, wrong map. I have fixed it now. Thanks for letting me know. The Arboretum map is great.

I would like to do this, but would not be available if the date does need to be changed to June 3.

I was in the pavilion once, it's quite nice but small, though not as stuffed with photographers as Alan Gardens usually is. Never got a chance to explore the outsides as it was raining then.

This is so close to my house, I might as well be the host. Just waiting to get the clearance from the Boss but will decide by Thursday.

Some good places to eat nearby ...

I was out there for an hour today before it started spitting.
Conditions are spring-like: a bit messy, but the spring ethereals like Solomon's Seal are coming along, and there are some flowering trees (Chestnut) and bushes (lilac and azaleas). Deer are kept out by a high fence. For the most part, close up details are probably most interesting, but it was rather windy for that today. A little wetness and still air would be good.

Env Canada is calling for periods of rain on Friday. If that forecast sticks I will probably reschedule for June 3. I will look at the forecast late Thursday night (after 10:00PM) and make a call.

Make sure you check Friday before heading out to see if it has been rescheduled.

This is a fabulous place to visit. I spent the day there today doing 2 workshops and exploring the outdoors mind you with kids in mind.

We say 2 raccoons in the trees, a deer, 5 baby fox, great blue heron, warblers, cat bird, robins, red winged black birds, the nest of the red tailed hawk, and lots of other things too.

It was great having someone point out where everything was and what the different species are.

OK, so the weather report is for a wet afternoon leading to a cloudy Friday evening (maybe with drizzle). Probably a lot like tonight.

On the other hand the long term into next week looks nice for the end of the week.

So I am going to reschedule to June 3rd. Sorry Janet.

DG

PS: I am probably going to regret this - watch it turn into a lovely evening.

I went to Humber years ago for photography and we used to shoot a fair bit in the Arboretum - learning macro, wedding mockups and that kind of stuff. My family and I went snowshoeing there this past winter and I found that even in the snow it's actually quite beautiful. I won't have the car that weekend so I won't be able to make it but I'm sure you guys will have a great time shooting - weather permitting of course!

This Friday I can't make it ... you guys can always go to the Woodbine Racetrack afterwards. I heard they have a great buffet!

Hi,

If someone could give me a ride back to the subway after, I'd really appreciate it, but getting there's no problem.

I'll definitely go back there.

Thanks Pam. I am glad you had some success. Sorry I had to leave you and Marie. I was sicker than I thought and basically was in bed for three days after I went home. Missed the engagement shoot too

I am just hoping I did not pass it on to anyone!

Maybe I will try to set up a fall event for a return to the valley for some colours.
