In case anyone is interested, The Bang Bang Club movie is opening this Friday. If you haven't heard of it, it's a movie based on real-life exploits of four photographers during the final days of South Africa apartheid.

I checked Cineplex's website and it's showing.

But I haven't had a chance to see it yet.

Cool, that's right by my work. I got a couple GC's for Cineplex too. Nice!

I saw the movie at an advanced screening a few weeks ago. I enjoyed it. Sad story with 2 of the 4 in the club now deceased.

Some reviews I read afterwards were a bit mixed - re: character development, who should have been the lead character, lead character being unlikeable, etc.

Neat to see how PJs worked using film. I liked the 'firing a blank frame' technique. Also, I though the Nikon neck straps used in the film looked to modern (or perhaps clean) for the times (early 1990s I believe).

Not much of a drama--as many reviewers correctly pointed out. However, the director's documentary roots do help the accuracy of the reenactment; he's obviously using archival footage and the photographs to set up his tableaux vivants and there is undeniable emotional value in that (I say this as someone who remembers vividly when these photographs first made magazine covers). Bring some reading matter and a small flashlight to the cinema for the romantic interludes--otherwise quite watchable.
