What is the current rate for hiring a wedding photographer? Do you guys have any recommendation for one in GTA (Markham)?

Packages range from free for the budding amateur who will stop at nothing to undercut, to over $4K for the top shooters with awesome books. Most fall somewhere in the middle. To make it even more difficult, each photographer will often have a number of packages that will greatly affect price.

Its not so much a set rate. I would describe it as value associated with a photographers ability. In the end you get what you pay for... usually.

I agree 100% with the statement above. You pay for experience and consistency, which just means that the cheaper you decide to go, the higher the probability that you'll end up with a photographer who will be using your wedding day to build her/his portfolio.

Many full-time wedding photographers consider their work to be more art than commodity. Couple that with lack of price regulation in the industry, and you'll have a huge range of pricing.

Where is the best place to look for a photographer?
I don't really trust CL or Kijiji.

You're probably better off having a plan, and then seeing if you can find someone that will fit into that plan.

1. Outline/rate your expectations:
-professional level: portfolio; quality of work; insurance; turn around time; references
-services provided: hours offered to shoot; number of photographers; types of additional lighting (on camera / off camera); image processing styles
-products provided: CD/DVD of images; processed images; printed material
2. Establish a budget based on those expectations
3. Then start to contact photographers that sort of fit within both.

If you seek someoen strictly based on budget, then you have a high risk of not being satisfied. I said to my g/f, it's not worth paying $700 for something I don't like ... I'd rather pay double and have my expectations met. Or, pay triple and have them exceeded. In the end understand what you are expecting ... that should end up with a realistic budget range.
