Thanks to everyone who showed up. It was a nice day overall.
I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. There were some nice clear skies
but they did not last too long.

According to Susan, we took the clouds with us. She said it stayed clear the rest of the night after we left.

Ions, great images. Super. I think your birds are Common Nighthawks. Nice capture.

So can anyone give any advice on what LED headlamp to get, that I can permanently leave in my camera bag for night events light this, or sunsets or sunrises?

Any LED light will do as long as you can remove the lens. I got a long roll of red gel from active surplus for 3 bucks and did my own. I can give you a piece.

dollarama has led headlamps for 2 bucks... add the gel mentioned above (or the toilet paper package plastic that I demonstrated)

The headlamp I had at the Barrens was an older Petzl model bought at the MEC store on King. It has a flip up red filter so I can go from white to red very easily. I also have a second headlamp that has a red lens that was a replacement lens. I bought the lens as part of a multi colour kit form MEC and it works with an even older Petzl model. MEC no longer seems to have the lens kits.

MEC does not seem to carry the Petzl model with the flip up lens anymore either. But they do have a model that uses white LEDs with a red LED included. It is the model Petzl Tikka Plus 2 Headlamp, but it is $37.

Another option I was considering trying out for quick camera checks and control adjustments is this light sold for bicycling called the MEC Turtle Red LED Light. It is a small red LED light and there is a two light version with a red LED as well (there are also white versions). The single light is less than $4 and the double is just under $5.

I've been screwing around with this image off and on for a while, I think I'm getting close to what I want from it:

That's really gorgeous ^ I love the blues and greens and the glassy reflection and don't shoot me here as I know you didn't ask for any critique but I feel that the top sky is a little too blue if you dodged it to match the reflection or burned the reflection a bit - I don't know that's just what I would do but don't listen to me. And let me know if this was inappropriate to say here.. I apologize if it was.

I would've removed the color fringe first.

Indeed. Still too much blue. This is caused by two problems. The first is when I first work on an image I blast the crap out of the saturation because... well, because I like to (although I usually return to the image later and back it off a bit) and because of the second problem: I do my editing on a laptop with an uncalibrated screen which is quite a bit darker than how most people have their screens set and it's also probably off, by at least a bit. So, what seems like slightly over-saturated colour to me on my laptop (what I want) ends up being too much on other, properly calibrated screens. If I were to print this or were to present it somewhere more professional I would make an effort to make sure the colours were right.

The colour fringe could not be removed first because it was caused by the pushing of the blues. I'm aware it's there although it's not really visible at that res - one reason I made it no larger - unless someone magnifies it to look for problems.
