I finally got a chance to check out the Essential Cinema exhibit at TIFF Bell Lightbox today. They've got artifacts from each of the 100 films on the essential list. Of interest to gearheads and Kubrick fans is the Fairchild-Curtis wide angle lens on display. Its field of view is 160 degrees and it's an f2. It's purported to be the lens used as the POV for Hal 9000. It's one massive hunk of glass.

I highly recommend the exhibit to any film geeks on the forum. They have Robert De Niro's NYC taxi license that he got while researching his role as Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver. There's also some very rare poster art and some of the animation cels from Saul Bass opening title sequence of Vertigo. I think the exhibit will be around until November (when the Tim Burton exhibit begins).

Very accessible. Lightbox is at the corner of King and John. You can take the subway to St. Andrew station and walk a couple of blocks west or just take the King streetcar from Yonge and King.

wmagpayo, do you know until what time is the exhibition opens daily?
And since you were talking about shooting spree, is camera allowed inside?

Awesome, thanks for the tip! Was at the lightbox for a TIFF screening, and it was pretty nice. It's too bad they had to accomodate stage in Cinema 1, because the screen suffers as a result; placed much too high. Definately looking forward to watching some essential cinema there, though!

The attendant told me it is open 10 AM to 10 PM daily. He did say that they rushed to set it up in time for TIFF so they may make some improvements before it ends in Oct. I forgot to ask if cameras and flash are allowed in the exhibit. The entrance is on King St west of John St, right across from Urban Restaurant.
