When: Monday Sept 6, 2010
Time: 11:30 AM
Where: boardwalk west of Ontario place (See map below)
Bring: Camera, Tripod, water, sun block, Sunglasses. a folding chair or a foam pad.

We will be meeting near the blue marker on the map. this will put us in the middle of the "Air Box". look for the fire boat that is used by pilots as the center marker. this is just to the west of the VIP section.

Note: we are meeting 1 hour before the show. this will give us time to find a good spot to set up and people watch/ shoot.

there is a parking lot to the west of the meet location but you have to get lucky.

Due to all the construction on the lakeshore the commute may be a bit messy.

Normally I would join you Eddie but this year's line up sucks (imho). Think the CF-18s have been cancelled and the F-16 is the only fighter jet showing up.

Hey Eddie,

Monday is gonna be warmish dude. I'm gonna try for Saturday (18C). I've got a 100-400 rental from headshots 'til tuesday, so I might show up on Monday as well :-)

CF-18 is back in the show fyi - they found another plane and driver. Also should be a guest appearance by a WW2-era bomber.

TC will affect image quality rather drastically.

I threw a 2x on my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS the previous two years and haven't seen a big drop in image quality, then again I'm not selling the images, just web use.

Bring both and try different things to see how it affects your Image Quality, ability to capture and frame etc...

I'd definitely go as long as you possibly can as otherwise the planes look awfully small!

Is the CF-18 Hornet coming to the show?

YES! The CF-18 Hornet will indeed fly for you this
weekend at the show. (But NOT the full up demo.)
I KNOW you are as excited as I am to see it rip
by you this weekend.

I've been watching the weather for this one, and I'm getting dizzy. It seems to change every day. Now SUNDAY looks like the clear day, and Saturday and Monday look rainy and cloudy. I've not done this before, and only have a 70-200mm, but I'm thinking a full on flat white cloudy sky is not going to work for me.

I had used a 1.4x on the F.4 70-200mm & F4.5-5.6 100-400mm. I didn't see issues of image quality drop on the 70-200mm. For the 100-400mm, the 1.4x increased the f-stop such that the auto-focus doesn't work; so I noticed signficant drop of image quality because I had a hard time doing manual focus, especially since the object was pretty far. Auto-focusing stops working at F8, which I believe is F5.6 with 1.4x.

Note that this is based on a Canon TC & Canon lens experience. I didn't try printing in large format, but from the LCD it does look a bit softer. Here is an example of a lion I shot with the f4-5.6 100-400 with a 1.4x TC: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wycchan/3123125624

Went down today....show got cancelled. Just got home......Man it was damn cold down there and there were hurricane winds ablowing :-). Bring something warm......as soon as you cross the bridge around Jameson the wind kicks in......

BTW.....King Streetcar turns north and goes up to queen right before the GO bridge (and does a detour on queen).......If you're planning on walking down Jameson (which is real easy), stay on and get off at Queen and Jameson. There are shuttle busses on King traveling west, where the streetcar turns north, but they take forever to show up. It's a lot easier to walk south from Queen on Jameson (give yourself a extra 5 minutes).

I'm gonna try again tomorrow....friggin' weather.....now monday is actually looking nice.......I wish it would make up it's mind.

If the wind keeps on blowing, I think it will be canceled

I would have thought to have received email from the airshow insiders about the cancellation. Ah well, I was 'lucky' to have decided to not go today... but also 'lucky' to have to address a chassis (= 26 servers) go down at work :P

This may not work for everyone, but what I do is park out west from there and cycle down. no traffic woes. i did it today and spoke with a rep at the grandstands. that's when i found out it was canceled. about 1:45. was chilly i'll say. riding back west later into the wind was a good training exercise.

just to say: parking lots along the lakeshore are free during the weekdays before 5 p.m. they cost on weekends. i now park at the queensway cineplex on weekends.

The decision to cancel was made after the show had officially started - they only got the Aurora up in the air (partly because it can handle the weather and also to check the visibility of the water markers, windspeeds, etc. They shut it down once it was determined visibility was compromised, wind would have prevented too many of the teams from performing and rescue crews wouldn't have been able to their job.

Tomorrow's supposed to be much better.

this is @200mm from the same spot. you may not be able to get everything but I think you should be ok.

Batterries charged, lens and body well packed, memory card emptied, map printed, but it's raining and it is going to stay cloudy. It's a no go for me...

Sorry guys,

I know Eddie was working and all, but I think yesterday was the day. Got a lot of nice shots.....100-400 is now officially christened the airshow lens :-). 3000 frames to go through.....hehehehe......

BTW. The airshow was overall boring. The last part with the snowbirds was very cool, but the rest of it was just blah....F16 was nice, but I don't think they are allowed to make too much noise or anything this year. It was relatively quite, compared to last year. Last year was awesome :-).

Pics soon.....
