Details:

What: Let's Go To The Ex!
When: Wednesday September 1st 2010
Time: 5:30PM
Where: Meet just inside the Princes' Gates at the south east corner of the Direct Energy Centre.
Bring: Admission fee, camera, tripod, accessories.

An annual favourite, and now going on for 4 years I believe.... its our annual night time visit to the C.N.E. Time to harass more games attendants who don't want their pictures taken, and shoot the rides at night time getting some cool effects such as this one I took a couple of years ago:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lxdesign/224532716/" title="Coloured Fun by lxdesign, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/83/224532716_a72bc05913.jpg" width="500" height="332" alt="Coloured Fun"></a>

I haven't checked the website yet, but in past year's they have been offering a deal on Wednesday's for $5 admission after 5pm. I hope they still have the same deal going. We will meet at 5:30ish at the south east corner of the Direct Energy centre which is just inside of the Prices' gates. There is usually a parade around 6pm that we shoot, and then wander over to the food building for dinner. We then head into the midway, and shoot the night lights until we are exhausted. Sometimes upsetting the carnies along the way.

Yes, they are having the $5 off after 5pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Also Mac's Milk is selling early bird entrance tickets for 25% off for those who want to go all day, that's $12 instead of $16.

If there are people that can't make this event and would like one earlier on in the Ex's lifecycle I might be up/down for that as well.

Although if you've never done low light/night photography before you may want to read up on it before coming down so you already have some idea what to set your camera to (Google LOW LIGHT NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY), but there's always people in the group willing to help out.

Also the CNE has never complained about people bringing tripods (yet).

Very true! I've been doing this same outing since at least 2006 or 2007 ... and every year we go, and never have an issue with tripods. We have never been approached by security. We did have auxilary police ask us what we were doing once - and I showed them, and they had no issue whatsoever.

The only people that make a stink about us are the game carnies in the midway, otherwise .... no issues.

I definitely want to do the Ex this year - either with TPMG or on my own. Hard to say what days will work better for me this far out, but keeping an eye on this outing.

No problem, we usually end up splitting up at some point by the way.... people sometime go in their own direction, or half of the group goes in one direction. I am going the previous week with my wife, just to check out things, but not to do any shooting.

Just to add that we usually stop by the cafeteria halfway through for food. If you want to eat with us, try to stick with the group since it's difficult to find seats for everyone to sit together. We had to split into two groups for food last year. Shooting-wise, people usually stayed in groups of 3 or 4.

If you get lost, most of us will have TPMG orange tags attached to our bags. Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Awesome, thanks. I just meant new to this group, I've done plenty of low light photography - I used to be friends with a firespinning group before I moved here :p

It's really great to hear that they allow tripods too. I'm from the US so I still have a little bit of a "be careful bringing a tripod ANYWHERE" mentality.

I don't think I'll make to the Ex this year so I have two food photo requests: An image of Deep Fried Butter & an image of a Cheeseburger in a bag please.

Bit early for me to commit. Even if I do, I work until 5:30 that day up at Yonge/Finch so I'd have to meet everyone in amongst the throngs of people later.

The CNE has been an annual photo pilgrimage site for me over the years: ranks up with Pride, Fergus Highland Games & Caribana in my Big 4 summer photo-ops.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/phil_marion/2786120354/" title="swing ride at dusk - CNE, Toronto by Phil Marion, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3252/2786120354_e2f90b914d_z.jpg?zz=1" width="640" height="428" alt="swing ride at dusk - CNE, Toronto"></a>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/phil_marion/4655577717/" title="waiting to show his game - CNE by Phil Marion, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4029/4655577717_91030a1a41_z.jpg" width="640" height="410" alt="waiting to show his game - CNE"></a>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/phil_marion/1315983135/" title="going for the gusto in stillettoes by Phil Marion, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1010/1315983135_2fc2dd9977_z.jpg?zz=1" width="403" height="640" alt="going for the gusto in stillettoes"></a>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/phil_marion/2786134956/" title="candied apples - CNE by Phil Marion, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3183/2786134956_36667b48ab_z.jpg" width="640" height="427" alt="candied apples - CNE"></a>

Many more if you click on the icon here:

<a href="http://www.flickriver.com/photos/phil_marion/sets/72157601849765941/"><img border="0" width="88" height="31" title="CNE - Canadian National Exhibition - a photoset by Phil Marion on Flickriver" alt="CNE - Canadian National Exhibition - a photoset by Phil Marion on Flickriver" src="http://data.flickriver.com/images/flickriver-88x31.png"></a>

Definitely bring a tripod, if possible. If you don't have one it is still possible to do some lowlight photographic candids or light trails. Most of the midway has tent poles, fences, platforms or guard rails to brace oneself against in case a long exposure is required.

Though I've never been harassed by CNE staff about my tripod I am very careful not to set up in high traffic areas. When it gets dark you need to be careful not to set up in areas that running children will absentmindedly crash in to your gear.

I miss the Bulova Tower....
