So, I've just been staring at my Ontario Atlas a bit.....

Couple of thoughts:

(1) Lakes are cool. Nice to get some reflections in your photos, that sort of thing.

(2) East is better than west (arguably), because west has Mississauga/Brampton, and although east has urban sprawl too, it's a little less severe.

Anyway, here is my question: Look at Lake Scugog. As you can see, it's shaped like a horseshoe, so there's a western bit and an eastern bit. At the southern end of the eastern bit, on my atlas, there's a picnic table symbol, indicating (presumably) a little park of some sort. (This is at the eastern end of "Reader Rd." See it?) Anyone been up there?

In terms of drive time, it ought to be the same as Long Sault. And any photos that you take aimed out over the lake would be aimed *away* from Toronto; that's good.

What do you guys think of trying out that spot on Thurssday (the 12th), and seeing how it goes?

I used to fish there a while back so if memory serves me, if you go towards Port Perry, there is a public dock along the waterfront that you can setup by. If you want a little more "rustic" feel without getting the dock etc in your shot, you can continue along 7A where it cuts across the bottom of Lake Scugog. I believe it's a bit of a marshland along that corridor.

Would be great to get some sort of consensus for this (possible) mid-week event...

What are you guys up for? Wanna stick within TO? Wanna head an hour out of town? Or 90 minutes?

** UPDATED **

So, I've updated this thread. Given that it's not clear how many people would be coming out, I've opted for the Beaches. (That way, if it's just me, I can get there and back on public transit.)

Meeting time: 10:00 p.m.
Tim Horton's, Queen Street just east of Lee Ave.

From Tim's we can walk down to the beach.

Bring: Camera, tripod, beach blanket or towel for laying down and looking up.

See you there!

I'm making another run for the Barrens as long as the weather is good. My car is full but I'd be happy to meet people there.

Am I the only one who thinks of World of Warcraft when I see everyone talk about the 'Barrens'.... If I go that far North it better be just as awesome as Blizzard makes it..

Livescience article on the Perseid meteor shower that includes a sky map of where to look and a viewing guide.

I point at you star gazers and laugh. My ideal meteor shower is one that rains destruction in the sky. Until we can remotely see something like that near here (maybe in 2012) I will comfortably enjoy my nights rest.

By the way, I saw more shooting stars in Chris's backyard during the "Aurora Snorialis" than during the last meteor shower. To those going with high expectations, expect to be disappointed. However, you can prove me wrong this Thursday :D

I am not decided yet, but when I see the weather this afternoon I will know where to head. If it's really clear, I might go back up to Torrance.

Current forecast is cloudy on Thursday in Orillia, rain in Burlington and partly cloudy in Toronto. They don't have a fricken' clue.

A friend of mine used to view them from the Cheltenham Badlands, which is a few km south of there.
I've not been to the park itself, but the Forks of the Credit road is an awesome drive with the hairpin.

Tonight might turn out to be better, weather-wise, than tomorrow. Who knows... Anyway, whatever you're doing tonight, you might want to take a break and look up. :)

Now the forecast is saying cloudy this evening but possibly clearing tomorrow evening. I vote we fire all the meteorologists and give their jobs to astrologists.

A little update on my meteor watching.

I went to Elgin Mills and McCowan in Markham last night since it was clear and was able to see a fair amount of meteors. We were there from about 11:30pm to 2:30am and, although I wasn't counting, my friend counted 23. But there were a few that I saw that she didn't so I guess it's more like 30 or so in 3 hours.

Here's a startrail image that I took. It's a composite of many 3 minute exposures.

The road is closed for construction.

Forecast looking pretty good at the moment.

I'll aim to bring my telescope, in case people want to look at Jupiter when it comes up.

(*Ahem* feel free to sign up [I mean, unless you're heading out of town].)

You should still be able to access the park from the North
