Details:

What: Meteor shower and star trails
When: Saturday August 7th 2010
Time: 3 PM
Where: Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Reserve
Bring: -- Blanket, maybe a pillow, lawn chair
-- bug repellant
-- camera capable of taking time exposures
-- cable release
-- tripod
-- extra batteries
-- binoculars for stargazing, if you have 'em
-- red flashlight (if you have a white flashlight, put some red plastic over it. A Skittles wrapper works reasonably well)
-- Bug Repellant
-- Toilet paper
-- Food for a supper time picnic
-- snacks for star gazing

Some information and directions are available here
http://www.rasc.ca/lpa/torrancebarrens.shtml

A group of us did this last years ago and had a good time.
Thought I would start a little earlier as there is lots to
shoot here even in the day time and there are some marked
hiking trails around some small lakes.

For your convenience I have arranged for...

1 -- The sun to set at 8:36 PM
2 -- A meteor shower Called the Perseid during the night
3 -- A cresent moon to set at 6:53 PM Aug 7th

Tim

Here is a link to a 13 page pdf map to Torrance Barrens.
It starts on the 400 north of the 401 and give step by step directions.

I may be in Trenton for a parade around then. Unconfirmed though.

If we had decided on Long Sault instead, I could say for sure.

I have a parade in the afternoon, so I'll likely get to Torrance Barrens sometime between 3:00 and 7:00.

I don't think I'm going to wait for the crescent moon on Aug. 16.

Ok Janet. I changed the moon set to 6:53 PM.

I just hope no one gets upset about that :)

Could it set on the morning of Aug. 8, or do we have to wait a week for it to set? (Just kidding, of course)

I was there on Saturday, the last weekend of the wettest June in memory. Man did my feet get wet.

If we are staying right through to the moon set on the 16th we will have to add a few items to the list of stuff to bring.

Ok Bruce. I changed the date too. I hope I don't get in trouble for moving
planets and stars around just to please some photographers :)
While I am here, would you people like for me to have the beaver swim
across the lake at sunset like I did last year.

Tim

This looks great, and its the weekend AFTER we release our quarter end results so I think they might actually unchain me from my desk by then!
If so, I'll have some seats available in my car...will confirm if I can go within the week...

We usually got until about 2:30am. After that the dew starts to get to heavy on your camera and lenses. We try and separate the cars that are staying and those that are leaving earlier so the lights don,t disturb anyone.
