Does anyone subscribe to any?

I'm interested in diving more into the world of photography - I don't get out shooting as much as I would like and I always enjoy reading up on tips and techniques (like strobist) and gear reviews.

Are there any magazines like that out there?

Take a trip to an Indigo (especially the larger ones)...see what magazines they have there.

Personally I dislike subscribing...yes you save over the newsstand price, but you can get a lot of issues you have no interest in, or stuff you already know.

The best deal though is still online where you can read many articles people post for no cost (other than bandwidth).

That's a good point. The reason I was thinking of subscribing is that I'd have something to read - even though I might not be interested in it, I'd still like to have it.

Online is an awesome choice - but again, aside from strobist, I don't know any other blog site where the person shows a picture and talks about techniques associated with it.

It's either that, or they do things that are out of my league. I like being able to read something and have the means to actually try hehe

I subscribe to Digital Photo Pro, Shutterbug, and Photolife. the first 2 are american and the third is canadian. there are also a lot of other european magazines are asian magazines in their respective languages that are also worth checking out if you know any languages other than english. I cant think of many off the top of my head but i know there are a lot of German, Thai, Chinese and Japanese ones as well as many british publications. you best bet is to - as Mikefellh said - gt to a Chapters/Indig/Worlds Biggest Bookstore and look through the racks of magazines all broken down by category. TONS of stuff out their. you jsut have to look.

There is also the thread in the photographic resources tab on this forum. Here is the link: http://tpmg.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=103

Photolife but lately has been very Beginner oriented.....but occasionally great photo essays.

Digital Photo Pro sometimes....

American Photo I like. They have had pretty good issues once in a while.

I find american ones to be ad heavy.

Used to subscribe to LensWork - may actually go back because I miss it that much.

The thing I liked about that magazine was it focused on the photography aspect. No adverts for gear and the only adverts were for the magazine/books they published themselves.

Small format (like 6"x8") and was printed beautifully.

Being from the UK... I subscribe to Practical Photography. It's being going since (1957)1959, so I trust in their judgment and articles.

Funny, it's kind of a family thing... my Father (has been subscribing since 1970), sisters and I all have a subscription to it.

I used to subscribe to it as well in the 80's and 90's. It's an excellent magazine to learn different techniques. it has easy to follow tutorial and is inspiring. It is great for beginners.
I find most of the North American photography magazines to be gear-obsessed rather thn technique-centered. And they reflect this bias by having way too many gear advertisements. Most of the pages are gear selling ads with far too little articles. Go with the Brit mags. they are great sources of information about the photographic process. The American mags are great sources for information about gear. And yes, that's an oversimplification.

Personally, with online resources being greater than they were a decade ago, I'd get the info online. I don't bother with magazines unless I am on a long flight. With a mag subscription you find you're paying for some issues have no interest for you. Online is free and you search exactly what you're looking for.
Enjoy!

What's a "magazine"? Some sort of printed internet? ;)

I used to get Practical Photography too. Now, when I'm in the market for a magazine, travelling or whatever, I have no allegiance to any particular title and just grab whatever has the most interesting articles from the newstand. I've grabbed Amateur Photographer from time to time and although it does lean toward the beginner it's alright.

You search for whatever you're looking for, Google is your friend.

Looking for tutorials on flash, search for FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY TUTORIAL. Looking for image galleries lookup ONLINE PHOTOGRAPHY GALLERIES.

If you're looking for an image of something in particular, use Google Images.

It's worked for me all my years that I've been looking for photography info online...otherwise we'd be listing sites forever as there's TONS of information online.

Another recommendation for Lenswork- you can check it out on their website, but they no longer are available on newstands. I subscribe.
