Details:

What: ions Presents Alice's Tour of Hamilton Area Waterfalls
When: Saturday July 3rd 2010
Time: 11AM-ish?
Where: Tim Hortons: 434 Plains Rd E. Burlington ON, L7T 2E1
Bring: Camera, Tripod, ND filters, bug spray/sunscreen and hiking shoes.

Since this is a trip that has been done at least a couple times by this group we can pick and choose what we'd like to see over today and tomorrow. We'll meet in Burlington to pick me up, :D, and then I figure we'll start down in the Dundas/Ancaster area and mosey east toward the falls up on Hamilton Mountain. Particularly Albion.

Edit: Tentative Itinerary:
After we get together in Burlington we head West and start with Tew's Falls. While there we'll knock off Webster's Falls as well. According to City of Waterfalls.ca this should kill at least 3 hours with hiking. We'll take a food break and then journey West briefly for the Darnley Cascade. Had enough? No? Good! Because there's more! Next we head East through Hamilton for Buttermilk Falls, Albion Falls and Felker's Falls. I'm pretty sure that should be exhausting, but if not we can do some push-ups or something. Something can include some dusk/night shooting at Spencer Smith Park/downtown Burlington as we make our way back to where we started. It's not very exciting there but there are some good shots of the Skyway bridge that can be taken from that vantage point.

If you can not catch a ride the West Lakeshore GO route runs at all stops from Union (and East of there) to Aldershot and back again hourly until around midnight. It takes about an hour from Union to Aldershot. If this is how you plan on coming out let me know so we can arrange for you to be picked up at Aldershot station.

The 9PM start was initially set because I was going to invite Ken Rockwell, who of course doesn't need light to shoot, but I have since changed it to 11AM for us mere mortals. And yes, be prepared to walk! Alice is a slave driver and insists on tons of walking! I've lost 5lbs from shooting with Alice!

Chris, thanks for setting this up. Now I know why all your events involved lots of walking. It's b/c someone wants to lose weight!!! You should buy me a beer for every pound you've lost b/c I'm such a good trainer for being a slave driver .

Don't worry about me for a ride - if the seat is empty when you get to Burlington I'd rather take it than drive around in my car empty, it only makes sense to carpool. But if your car is full Simon I have no problem driving.

I'm putting together an itinerarythat should fill the day up. I'll try and get is posted tonight (hopefully). If the facilities are available is anyone interested in using a park BBQ for food?

Just a friendly reminder - bring a pair of gloves. You'll hold on to trees & brunches to go down the steep hills, so it is best to put on gloves. Don't thank me, I learn this from Eddie S :).

Heh. Yeah... As of now they're both charged but I have the tall ships tomorrow... I should be able to get everything fully charged for all the falls provided I remember. A full day doesn't usually eat a whole battery for me.

Thanks for organizing this, Chris! Another beautiful day with lots of exercises, 9 hours of walking and climbing up and down the hill with no sleeping the night before (couldn't go to sleep after the dance cruise). A bit tired but lots of fun!

Aaron, nice to see you again!
Simon, thanks for the ride!

Glad you enjoyed. It was a good outing indeed! Thanks to Simon for the filter use! They definitely help when the light is as it was.Too bad we missed Buttermilk and Felkers. I'd like to hit the Darnley Cascade again with better light. I'll definitely be doing this set of falls again in the autumn when the leaves are changing. And a hike to the foot of Tew's... that'll be a more serious:

Quote:
At the bottom of one of the cascades, the creek from Tews Falls enters Spencer's Creek on the far side. You will have to wade across the creek. Be careful, the currents are strong, and the rocks are hard on the feet. You can then walk up the east side of the creek to the base of Tews Falls. This is not a maintained trail, and the going is a bit rough at some points. Along the way you will pass the 10 foot high lower Tews Falls. The entire trip, from Websters Falls to the base of Tews falls, will take about one hour. Source

That sounds interesting! Can I ask if you used a Circular Polarizer or an ND Grad Filter for the falls?

Thanks.

Yes, I used both throughout the day although not at the same time. So did Simon as they are his filters :). The shots displayed here so far were taken without filters since Simon and I were bogarting them at Albion Falls. At least as far as I remember I don't think Alice's shots at Albion were taken with filters... And we didn't have a filter that would fit illcreator's lens so his shot is also filter free.
