Details:

What: Toronto Tall Ship Festival
When: Friday. July 2nd 2010
Time: 12pm
Where: Meet at the Foot of Bay Street & Queens Quay at the sidewalk (not the ferry dock entrance). We will walk west from here to check out the tall ships.
Bring: Camera gear, sun block, comfortable walking shoes, water.

The tall ships are coming to Toronto! And there is a big old festival from June 30th to July 4th 2010. I have the Friday off on July 2nd, so I thought I would come into town, and check out the ships in the afternoon. We'll start by meeting at the foot of Bay Street along Queens Quay - just west of the Harbour Castle Westin hotel. We will then walk west along the harbour, and check out all of the ships.

Make sure you wear some comfy shoes, and bring some water, and possibly sun block depending on the weather. We will probably shoot until 3 or 4pm, and we can grab a drink after, but I am heading to dinner with friends that night.

I was eager to see the replica of the Amistad. Unfortunately it suffered damage during a storm so its a no show.

This is the line up for ships expected to come http://www.towaterfrontfest.com/ships.asp

Hey Scott, you could start an ad-hoc thread for Saturday. I know not everyone is free on the Friday. I am hoping that someone will join me.

Hey guys, I have a couple of questions; are we planning to go on board the ships? If I want to photograph the tall ships during the Parade of Sails, would Centre Island be a good spot or would I better off just doing it at Ontario Place?

Thanks in advance :)

I am a maybe. I plan to be out of the city that day but may have to cancel, in which case I will go to this meet.

I see the Empire Sandy is one of the participating ships. Canada's largest sail ship, she actually started service as a rescue tug in WWII and was re-launched as a sail ship in 1985. In the 1950s and 1960s she served as a logging tug on Lake Superior. At that time her name was the Chris M, named after my grandfather who worked at the paper mill that owned her. I have an old gallery here:

Hey Bruce.... Thanks for that historic info.... I knew a lot of the Empire Sandy's history. In 1998 and 1999 I lit up the ship for the Canada day parade of lights. Thankfully the ships generator provides 200amps 3 phase, and I was able to tie into one of the panels for the power we needed to light up the ship using theatrical lighting. That was tons of fun. We won 1st place in 1998.

Parade of sails is on July 4th, not the 2nd. This event is on the 2nd. Thanks.

fyi, I can tell you the Bounty's arrived as I'm looking at parked downstairs. It's currently along the between York and Bay (not visible from road). Not sure if it's open for visits yet.

I was planning to go down wednesday to catch some coming in, friday to meet the group for the first time and then hang around down there sunday to catch what i can of the Parade of Sail. With the Bounty already here, it sounds like I should drop the Wednesday idea. I have nothing else to do if I go. Any suggestions? thanks...

Hey Folks, there is a $12 fee for going on the ships. I am planning to buy a ticket for this.

I changed my registration from "Maybe" to "I have to work Friday" because there is no option for "I'll be photographing waterfalls north of Lake Superior on Friday"

:D

Thanks for pointing that out! I'll probably do it onsite -- as I am lazy. :)

I'm working friday, so can't join the group. I'm off tomorrow though, so will go tomorrow morning instead. Will pass along any useful info if i happen to come across such.

oh, and another tidbit, the aforementioned Bounty was at least partially lit up last night (i got home around 10:45pm), the lights weren't very bright but there were definitely lights softly illuminating it down from the tops of the masts.

I apologize, but I'm going to weasel out. I went down that way this evening, and the crowds were pretty bad. I don't think anybody wants to hear me complaining about the crowds every 5 minutes.

I'm going to be a couple hours early arriving at Union probably just before 10. If anyone wants to join me for a brief G20 aftermath shoot or whatever shoot me a PM.

It could be less on Friday since Thursday was a holiday, and people have to work or go to school on Friday!

I don't really have to work on Friday, but I've decided not to go. Thought I'd sleep in a little, and have a relaxing day instead of getting up early to head into TO. Hope you guys have fun!

Dang, I lost track of time.

I wondered why there were so many kids in the stores on Wednesday when they were supposed to be in school, I just figured they got out early due to the holiday...so much for my kid-free shopping time.

Do you guys know about parking there? Are the parkings crowded today? Which one is the closest one?
Thanks.

I'm actually heading down early to get a head start, but I'll try to remember to meet up at the meeting place.

According to the website, Paid Parking is available at 10 York St, 45 Bay St, and 71 Front St West...I'm TTCing myself, so I can't comment on the parking.

Thanks, Mike. I'll be there today, but sorry guys, I won't be able to join TPMG "band". I lead a non- (or rather semi-) photographic group ;-) If I see you, I'll come to say hello :-)
