I had a chance to talk with Canadian astronaut Julie Payette at a reception for STS-127 (July 2009) a few months ago and asked her about the equipment NASA uses for photography. They primarily use Nikon D3x/s cameras with high-end primes and shoot procedurally according to settings determined by NASA photography specialists... they take thousands of images every mission, most of them predetermined but there are downtimes when they can shoot points of interest or topical subjects that come up after the shoot list has been locked down. She told me they usually carry 'a fair number' of cameras onboard. Everything is uploaded to NASA during rest cycles in-mission.

Know a guy through the car forums that does some photography work for NASA and was involved in this little project to capture Discovery getting prepared for launch. Final results... time lapse video from start to finish.

The end of the shuttle era is nearing. :(
