I'm trying to come up with this project dealing with high speed flash photography. Concept is a high speed freeze frame of a boxing glove/arm punching someone in the face, and his face spewing blood, spit and a mouth guard.

Gear and settings? I'm clueless with flash photography..

Thanks.

You should be able to freeze that with normal flass. Depending on your flash duration on your flash.. 580 ex? Im pretty sure its fast enough to freeze something like that. Try it out the lower your power on your flash the faster the flash duration (basically the flashes shutterspeed)... WHen you adjust shutter speed with a flash your adjusting ambient light .. When you adjust your fstop your adjusting the power of your flash. So find your cameras max sync speed (probably around 1/250)

Ah, the good ol' ghost punch.

1/250th should do it. You will need to do it over and over and over to get everything working right, never mind the difficulty in having your model stand there with a mouth guard and fake blood in their mouth and then spit them repeatedly

Very cool. Thanks for all the tips.

So 1/250th shutter to freeze and play with the f-stop?

For gear, I was thinking of using 3 vivitar 285hvs in a 3 point lighting setup. Sort of like this? http://i43.tinypic.com/ims1vt.jpg

Will I be able to fake it? The model was actually thinking of getting punched.. haha and he doesn't mind.

Cool. He'll be glad that he doesn't need to get punched in the face.

Instead of 285hvs, will I be able to do it with continuous video lights?

If you are in a dark room and freezing the motion only based on the flash pulse length, you may find that you run into flash sync issues when using multiple flashes as although each flash typically will have a short duration (~1/1000s), they will not fire all within the SAME 1/1000 so you may have some image issues.
