Details:

What: Sunrise - Humber Bay
When: Sat. April 24
Time: 5:15am
Where: End of Humber Bay Park Road West
Bring: Camera, Tripod

I thought it would be an idea to shoot sunrise before going to the official event at High Park on Saturday. Sunrise is 6:20am, so we should start to get light about an hour before that. I don't know the parks that well, but the end of Humber Bay Park Road West looks like an easy spot to meet, with a little bit of parking, and then we can hopefully find the ideal spot from there.

Afterwards, we could head over to High Park for the official event at 8:00 am, and perhaps do a little bit of shooting in the park before the others arrive.

Maybe I'll force myself to get out of my bed and walk over to join, I have no sunrise photos whatsoever

I would be up for it but I live downtown and don't drive. Subway doesn't start till 6. Let me see if I can take the Queen St. streetcar across or something. Man.. I hope I get up. I don't have any sunrise photo's either lol. Maybe we should do a pub night/sunrise Ad-Hoc. That would probably be the easiest way for me.

If you end up taking 501 car on Queen, if it goes to Humber, get off at humber, walk through tunnel and through the highrises towards the lake, if you're taking Long branch it's closer, not sure which stop to get off at, check the ttc system map

There aren't many 501 streetcars at that hour. One hits Lansdowne and Queen at 4:53 am or 4:23. Every time I try to use the TTC trip planner for arriving at 5:00 it conks out. Hmmmm......

The last sunrise I photographed was in November from a canoe, so I am due for another dawn shoot.

The DVP is closed this weekend but AFAIK the Gardiner will be open.

I will be leaving from Queen / Spadina and could give someone a ride from the area. PM me.

Undecided if I will go to the High Park Cherry Blossoms but if I do I won't stay long.

Bruce

can we park the car all the way up to the shooting area? or we have to walk from lakeshore blvd west..... I'll force myself to wake-up with the 3-alarm-clock system ( 5 mins interval) .. :) hope that works....

I'm nauseous thinking about being awake that early. Although sunrise pics would be cool...

I like Bart's suggestion of the all nighter. There must be other nighthawks out there.

I'm in Scarbs, so I'm certainly out... but you did get me thinking about doing a Guildwood Bluffs east end shoot. hmmm

good luck to all of you

It is a great day to shoot the sunrise. The sun rises right by the CN town and the skydome. Too bad the DVP is closed, I come from Richmond Hill so it is a drag without the DVP. I am a maybe.

I am fairly sure there is parking at the end of the road, which is the reason I chose that spot to meet. However, I am not familiar enough with the park to know if that is the best spot to shoot the sunrise. Perhaps someone who is more familiar with the area could offer some suggestions.

Since the DVP starts from the 401, couldn't you just drive to 401 across and then go down 427? That should be the same right?

If I knew so many people are coming for the sunrise, I wouldn't spent so MUCH time negotiating with Janet to push the time from 5am to 5:30am, then both agreed on 5:15am after the LOOOOOOOONG negotiation :D.

According to the Photographer's Ephemeris, the astronomical twilight starts at 4:32, the nautical twilight starts at 5:13 and the civic twilight starts at 5:50 and sunrise at 6:21. Does anyone know what these twilights means and when should we be there? Sound like 5:15 is pretty good though.

I also checked streetview and looks like a bit further east should be better vintage point. But we can still meet at the end of the road and head back east after we meetup.

You can click on items in TPE and it will show the relevant help text. Simply put, civil is when a small amount of light is visible at the start or end of the day.

"Civil twilight is defined as the period when the sun lies between 6 and 0 degrees below the horizon.
Of the celestial bodies, only the brightest stars and planets remain visible during Civil Twilight. Illumination is bright enough to distinguish objects in the landscape."

"Nautical twilight is defined as the period when the sun lies between 12 and 6 degrees below the horizon.
At this time, stars remain visible in the sky for navigational purposes and objects on the horizon are only just visible."

"Astronomical twilight is defined as the period when the sun lies between 18 and 12 degrees below the horizon.
At this time, point light sources such as stars remain visible in the sky, but fainter objects such as nebulae and galaxies are no longer visible. The majority of observers would consider Astronomical Twilight to be effectively dark."

Thanks for the info. I think the 5:15 meeting time should be just fine, It will take us another 15 mins to find the right spot and setup. Just in time for civil twilight to start, I assume that is when light starts to show.

Assuming my little ones let me get some sleep before then, I hope I can be there, no Sunrise shots for me either, and this will actually be my first event with TPMG, looking forward to it.

Won't make the Sunrise as I just got home from a unions prep meeting which involved mega reading and am dead tired. Will see you all at High Park for 8:00am

Just FYI there was a shooting at Lakeshore and Albert, not too far from where we are going. They have reopened the area. But if you see lots of cops that's why.

Thanks Janet for setting this up. Although YOU forgot to sign up too :)
It was a great day and location for the sunrise.
Nice to see some familiar faces and meet some new people.
