Hey all,

This weekend I was about to take my dog out for a walk with my wife and grabbed my 40D to make sure the battery was charged and it was ready to go.

I checked the battery and it was fine and decided to change my ISO down to 200 since the last time I had used the camera I'd left it at 800. Well the ISO button did not respond. I proceeded to try and take a photo and every time I pressed the shutter, it gave me a "Busy" on the top LCD and then nothing. When I tried accessing the menu, the back LCD would not even turn on and after a few on/off cycles, I noticed that the LCD was not coming on at all for the lens cleaning cycle when turning the camera on or off.

I've looked online at a bunch of forums and people have suggested doing a hard reset by taking both the main battery and the date/time battery out and letting it site for a while then toggling the on/off button and the shutter a few times and then throwing the batteries back in. No luck with that procedure and if no one on the forum has any suggestions on how to fix this, I'm just gonna take it to Canon in Mississauga.

Ideas anyone?

Thanks!

Berge

time to get a new camera? :)

sounds bad; I'm no expert but I suppose this calls for expert maintenance.

Maybe try unmounting the lens and see if that does anything different. Also, you could download the latest firmware and try re-flashing it in case something in the SW got corrupted.

So here's the follow-up.

I took it in to the Canon service center up in Mississauga and after a couple weeks with them and $200 for labour, they gave me a call yesterday and said it was ready to go. Turns out that my PCB was fried which, the lady explained to me, is basically the motherboard for the camera. My guess is that PCB stands for Process Control Board, but I could be wrong there.

Either way, my camera is back, I'm $200 poorer, and I'm looking forward to some spring shooting!

PCB = Printed Circuit Board if my memory serves me right.
