I went over to see the Tulou ("earth dwelling", "round stronghouse" ) of Fujian province in mainland China just prior to the Easter holiday.
For a background history of the various sites of Tulou Fujian Tulou - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fujian Tulou is however the official name adopted by UNESCO for all dwellings of this type. There is no way that I can take images of an unspoiled and unmodified Tulou.
Even with elaborate effort in preserving the historic structures and presenting it to interested tourists, destruction is everywhere. Some of destruction was done by the residents there who cannot resists the temptation of modern convenience like sewer, gas supply and road system....

Set up for tourists' viewing is really difficult for flimsy structure as shown here. I can see the need for full legal waiver for U S tourists. But that is not set up at all.

Very sophisticated ventilation system on roof tiles of Tulou

Sorry. I took very few typical tourist shot like this one.

Some of the entrance fee goes to the colorful performance. But I would rather they spend more in preserving the old fixtures and flimsy structures

Other temple shots in Xiamen, Fujian province, China

I should have brought in my Zenitar 16mm as my Sigma 24-60mm is not as wide as I would need in certain tight spot

Cool shots. I saw Tulou in a documentary not too long ago. Can't recall which. It looked pretty interesting. I'm doing a 3wk tour of China in October but I don't think this is one of the stops. Thanks for sharing.

You have a great trip and back with lot of images. There are hundred of destinations in China worth going. Avoid SW (for drought) and Shanghai (for crowd in Expo 2010). That is my take only
