Had to pass this on to you...check out the amazing macro photography of dew on insects taken at ~3a using a flashlight (the article refers to this as a "torch"):

i've never been able to achieve stellar images with a reverse lens. there always seems to be a dark circle around the whole image (granted I am not using any sort of attachments, just my hand holding the lens)

I think the trick is to use a reverse adapter and close down the aperture beforehand so that you get decent depth of field. Plus using a good tripod and plenty of light.

extension tubes maybe, also looks like a diffuser or ring light with just top light on, so I would say more like a diffuser of some sort on a flash - check the reflections on wet parts

i've never tried closing the aperture that way, but if it actually works, that's a REALLY cool trick! thanks!

OMG is that how you do it properly?! haha i have always put another lens in front of my own to take the shot. gosh i am stupid. if you're a nikon user, there's a switch at the bottom of all the lenses that let you open and close the aperture blades manually (i believe it's only on lenses without the aperture ring)

edit: ok so i tried it out and it works great!!! making the aperture smaller (increasing the aperture?) definitely increases DOF however light severely suffers.

Probably the Canon 50mm macro (or equivalent) which goes 5x rather than 1:1 like most other dedicated macros (the 100mm, 180mm etc...)
From the reflections, he seems to be using a single diffused flash overhead. Throw that lens on a 5D mk2 and you can crop and zoom to incredible detail.

love it.

Not the same old stuff we've seen hundreds of times. This photographer had their own idea and executed it very well.

This comment on that page sums it up:

"Its not the camera which takes pictures but the mind and heart.Hats off Mr Miroslaw Swietek.,Good job"

I believe the Canon 50mm macro only does 1:2 and 1:1 with additional adapter.

Sorry, was thinking actually of the MP E 65mm f2.8 macro.

most likely, which is essentially an overpriced reverse lens...
