I wonder if anyone know how to calculate the distance you need to move to go from 35mm to the equivalent of 70mm and also from 35mm to 24mm? I am trying to figure out in order to replace the zoom range of a 24-70mm zoom lens with a 35mm prime, how much back and forth movement is required?

I always found "zooming with your feet" to be nonsensical... it's not nearly equivalent since your perspective completely changes. But anyway, for a single subject at a fixed distance from the camera, the change in distance is inversely proportional to the change in focal length. So if you double the focal length, you want to halve your distance to the subject.

Thanks!
Yes, zoom with your feet is very different from zooming with the lens. As in here : http://photodoto.com/zooming-with-your-feet/
I just want to get an idea on the distance. So what you mean is if the object is 100 feet away, if I want to go from 35mm to 70mm I have to go half the distance? That is pretty far.

That is correct, you would have to get 50 feet closer to the subject with the 35mm lens, if you want to achieve the same image height as you would with a 70mm lens. And if you want the equivalent to a105mm instead, you need to cut your distance down to one third (35/105 = 1/3), walking 66.67 feet closer.

That's why I shoot with zooms now... less walking.

I just replaced my 24-70L with a 35L :D I guess I would be doing a lot of walking now :D Or I could just switch lens.

Congrats on the 35L! :D. It's my favorite lens, on my camera 85% of the time. And yes, foot zooming isn't as bad as you think. I guess I'm used to it now.

Should we start a 35L club? hahaha

Yes congrats on the 35L :) It's almost stuck on the mount of my camera. I rarely use any zooms now. Soon your subjects will start to tell you, do you really need to shoot that close?

Love this focal length and the perspective it brings!

I put it through a micro-adjustment as soon as I got it and happy to find that it does not need any adjustment at all! AF is spot on. Only this lens and the 100mm 2.8L macro IS do not need any adjustment. Even the 70-2002.8 IS MKII needs a -4 adjustment to make it tack sharp. I switched to this lens when I found out that my 24-70 was really soft on the wide end. The problem with zoom and micro-adjustment is that you can adjust for on focal length but then the other focal length maybe off. I am happy to get this lens because of all the good things I heard about it. Now I just need to get used to zooming with my feet :)

Humm, funny you should mention this. I originally tested my lenses with my 1DMKIII and they were all on the money. I figured if it was good on my 1D, I shouldn't have any problems with them on my 5DMKII. A couple weeks ago, I decided to test out the focusing on my 5DMKII and found that 3 of my lenses were back focusing. Tested them with my 1D and they were still bang on. Go figure.

I had two copies of the 35L one that was +3 and the other was +4... looks like you have a winner!

I haven't had a chance to MFA the 100L but I'm excited to try some macro photography again in hopes the IS will help my patience.

How do you like the 70-200 mkII so far?

I tried out Spencer's 35mm on my 5DMKII. Wow. What an awesome general purpose walk around lens. Possibly on the list of "Must Have" but I've got a few other lenses that I've got to get first. :)

LOL, yeah baby! Add the 85mm f1.2L (unless the new Sigma 85mm f1.4 is a killer) as well. :D

Oh yes the 85L.. I will never let mine go again. I sold mine for no good reasons and I had to pay $150 more to get one back in similar shape. At least I sold mine to a fellow TPMGer who BTW refused to sell it back to me after repeated pleas. :D

The 70-200 II is amazing, it will be always in my bag for sure. With a 1.4X I can now get rid of my 300mm f4 IS. My 300mm is very shape but the 70-200 II can actually match it or even slightly better.

I just sold off my 35L, as it was the least used of my lenses. I actually prefer the 24L-II on my 7D than the 35L on my 5D-II :) I'm odd that way ...

Less distortion on the crop perspective or just the quality of the lens (the 24L)?

Better IQ on the 24L-II. If I need to go wider, I just use it on the 5D-II. Cheers.

I might get the 24L-II later after I get used to the 35L. For wide angle, I already have a Oly Zuiko 18mm 3.5 which is an amazing lens also. So I will see if I need the 24mm or not.

Thanks for pointing out the Oly! If I'm not mistaken, it's a small lens. I might consider that as an option for my m4/3 system (looking for small, good primes at the moment). Cheers.

It is definitely a great, small and easy to use lens. I have seen some review of it somewhere and it is excellent. I will dig it up and let you know.

Thank you! Obviously, the WA perspective will be lost on m4/3, but it would be fun shooting with it, nonetheless.

Nice! I've been looking for that Oly 18mm for a while now. I have heard nothing but excellent recommendations for it - I remember a while back seeing a user review against the Contax 18mm and outresolving it too.
