Im looking to grab a decently priced boom arm for an ab 800 + beauty dish or possibly Octabox .. Can anyone suggest one that they've used or have that works well ? Looking for a decent priced one I saw a few on Vistek but is there ones that you prefer better then others?

I saw this one http://www.vistek.ca/store/ProPhotoLigh ... -boom.aspx

It seems the norm extension is about 191 cm Now would you suggest this or does anyone have a better priced one they know of etc etc

Thanks

I have one of these and have used with an AB800 and a beauty dish. The boom bends when extended close to its maximum but aside from that it works out quite well.

The Manfrotto Super-Boom is probably the best option for the beauty-dish set-up unfortunately it's allot more expensive. I've used the one in your link and I'd say it's a little dangerous. (lots of sand-bags)

Seems pretty study from the pictures.

Yeah, they probably did it that way for added strength but you lose the portability. The avenger ones look ideal -- the States get all the good stuff:(

You'll probably want something with an adjustment crank so you can adjust your strobe with-out bringing it down or climbing a ladder to get to it once you've extended the arm.

I use a Westcott boom arm for a AB800 and a modified 22" Speedotron beauty dish + grid combo using the stock counterweight indoors and have extended the arm and did some funky positioning and it seems to hold fine.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/4 ... _Arm_.html

I have considered the Avenger D600 but man the boom arm itself is almost 8 lbs not including counterweight. I figured if I go on location shooting, the westscott one might be a better option for me.

I'd like to add as well, if you are using it mainly for professional shoots on location, you may want to spring for that D600 :) Imagine the boom arm/light stand falls over and clobbers your client.. omg! better have insurance :)

I think the boom arm comes off. There is a threaded screw. I think they mean you cannot remove the head from the stand and use it as a light stand.

this is sort of like a hijack of the whole question about the boom arm coz my tip has nothing to do with it...hehe...my friend and i found a 22" beauty dish for alien bees right here in ontario...kitchener to be more specific...the whole set (beauty dish, sock and grid) cost me $90 before taxes and of course, since we drove up to their warehouse, no shipping cost too. He sells online through ebay.ca and since he doesn't have retail space, he sells for less that what vistek is for comparable items.

here is the url if you want to check it out:

I've bought from these guys before. They're good folks to deal with. Hummm, has anyone used their big octos? I'm tempted to pick one up but wondering how it compares to say the Elinchom Octa?

I saw it displayed there and it looks awesome...the place looks like a candy store to me

The Octa and Parabolic umbrella fabric/frame seemed sturdy to me...but the fit of the octa into the speed ring of your Elinchrom I cannot say.

There is even a large parabolic reflector with a boom arm and stand available!

This guy seems to have a lot of stuff we want and He is not too far. Why not arrange a demo day with him. So we can go there and play with the parabolic and play with the boom arm and if we like them we can buy then and there. We can probably pre arrange a discount.

Sounds like a good idea.

Hey Bluntman, I saw that parabolic as well. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than the Broncolor Para Soft series or the Elinchrom Lightbank that's for sure!
