Just got a request to use some of my photos in a book on Lightroom 3, so I am wondering what I should ask or mention to the guy? Does anyone have any experience with such a request? Maybe I need some legal things covered or what?

Thanks in advance

Something like this has never happened to me. The only thing I've ever done it sold some photos for use in a magazine article. And I charged $ for each photo used. I had a heck of a time getting paid too.... I had to chase down the magazine to honour my invoice for 4 months.

An update:
The writer is preparing a book on Lightroom 3 in Russia, he wants to use one photo for full page, 3-4 small ones for screenshots
Commercial book published. I am not getting paid for use of my photos, just credited. He could potentially make $1500 from the book's sales

So I am wondering is it worth to do it for just publicity and publication? Or should I insist on some money compensation and if yes, how much is reasonable?

There has to be SOME compensation. Publicity from a book like this, unless you're looking for work from Russian clients, seems to have limited value. Don't know what you can ask for though, sorry.

I don't know what you can ask either, but I guess it comes down to how much this guy is willing to pay for them; in your case, it looks like nothing. So it's your call if you want to push some monetary compensation. Just make sure you read the fine print of whatever you sign so you don't give up the rights to your photos.

Just found this site on the net which may help.

experienced that before.

he asked, I replied and told him I'll gladly let him use my photos if he'll pay for it. He came back with bs like no budget, blah blah, conversation ended.

I personally wouldn't do it. They are basically asking for free photos with very little benefit to you. And since it's a Russian publication it very very little benefit to you.

At the end of the day, you're in the driver's seat here and have nothing to lose.

You need to determine if there's any money out there for you. Is it a reknown author/publisher?
Although it could be good to pad the CV.

IMO you guys are thinking too hard about this. I understand your wanting to get paid, acknowledgement, etc.

I bet if the Russian guy decides to just use your photos without asking (god forbid), what can you do about it? Would you have even known? He's publishing in Russia in Russian I assume.

Money - I can bet you won't be getting any.

Potatoeye, as mentioned above - it's nice for the CV (but that's assuming that it's even relevant). Is this going to be your career? For a hobbyist like myself, if I can shoot a pic that somebody admires and evokes an emotion or a response - that is sometimes reward enough for me.

I thought about the CV part, and decided that if it was in an English book, that's another story, but since it's Russian, not worth it. Also I do speak Russian, so I might come across this book if my pics get there without my knowledge, I also have friends who could inform me. That won't be the case, since he already let me know about it. So this particular situation wasn't really beneficial to me, unless I got some money, which I politely and clearly stated. The dude refused paying, thus conversation ended, in case the publisher decides to pay for illustrations in future, he will contact me. I doubt though, but who knows. If I got the same request from an English speaking end of the World, I'd give my pictures with no hesitation, can always use for CV

The main reason why I didn't want to just give the photos is his book was purely commercial, he was making money on my photos.
