Details:

What: St. Patrick's Day Parade
When: Sun 14 March 2010
Time: 12:30pm
Where: North-East corner of Bay and Queen Streets (by Old City Hall)
Bring: Yourself, camera; optional: money for food afterward

You don't have to be Irish to come out to this. You don't even have to be able to find Ireland on a map!

Come on out and shoot marching bands, people in costume, floats, and who-knows-what-else.

I'm planning the meeting place and time at the northeast corner of Bay and Queen Streets. The parade starts at noon at Bloor and St. George, so I think if we meet at 12:30 we'll still have plenty of time to get set up before the parade reaches us.

I assume this is still happening even with the "light rain" on Saturday?

Yes -- if the parade is still on, then the event is still on! It's a good idea to bring something to protect yourself and your gear from the rain. If it does rain, just remember: at least it's not snowing.

Also, remember to set your clocks ahead 1 hour on Saturday night, otherwise you might only catch the last part of the parade!

just pretend you're in Vancouver...... if they scheduled things around the rain in Vancouver, nothing would ever happen!

Ha ha... I'm from Vancouver & I should be used to the rain, but today just reminded me how much I hate rain!

If it doesn't rain too hard, I am going there, not sure about the location though

In a way it is. At least there is no harsh contrast and no need for fill flash. High iso cameras will have an edge tomorrow

Given that it'd rain, I don't think I would attempt switching lens. I've got a f2.8 17-55 & f4 70-200 on a 1.6x crop body. Which lens would you suggest bringing?

Anyone know if there are going to be lots of floats? I took the 70-200 with me to the Santa Parade & found that I was too zoomed in to see the entire float, it worked great to if I just want to capture the expressions on a couple of performers though.

Bring both just in case. Hard to choose between the two. Speed vs Focal Length.

By the way, don't forget to change your clocks tonight

I think there will be some floats, but not as many or as large as the Metro Toronto Santa Claus Parade.

As far as I remember from last year's, it's mostly bands and people marching as well as some cars and funky moving pieces, like the outhouse last year  maybe 1-2 floats

that's why you need 2 bodies! One for the medium telephoto, and one for the longer zoom.

Thanks to everybody who came out for this. We were lucky in that there wasn't any rain, but unlucky in that the windchill still made it pretty cold.

I was cold even in my parka. Anyways, here is a few shots from the parade. Thanks John for picking an awesome location for shooting!
