Is anyone upgraded from 40D to 5D Mark II can share the experience? Is it worth the extra cost? Which lens is more useful? 24-70mm or 24-105L?

I started out with the 40d, then moved to the 5d and then the 5dM2 (an in between, messed around with 50d's as well which aren't worth it)...

But I think you're comparing apples to oranges.

There's roughly what... 2 or 3 years between when both bodies were released?
The 40d is a crop body, the 5dm2, a full frame body.
The 40d is roughly $500-600 USD, the 5dm2, $2000-2400.

It's like comparing a honda civic or accord to an acura tsx or tl

With that said, I believe whole-heartedly in the 40d as it's a great bang-for-the-buck camera that can't be beat in it's price range. It's a great camera for beginners. Good luck.

(and as far as the 24-70mm versus 24-105mm goes, I think most people would say the 24-70mm would be better for your needs with the f2.8. However, the 24-105mm is a great lens as well. It just depends on your specific needs and the (lighting) conditions you're shooting in)

Thanks. I think I would go for the 5D Mark II because for the wedding photography. I will still use 40D as backup.

I'm currently using a 40D and I'm thinking about upgrading to the 5D Mark II as well.
I personally use the 24-70 and my main reason for choosing it was because it's a very fast lens. That and I knew I would pick up a 70-200 at some point in time to get the remaining distance I need when I shoot. I have been told that the 24-105 is sharper and the IS would come in handy at times, but I still prefer being able to shoot in lower lighting situations.

I used to shoot with the 40D and now I shoot with the 7D and 5Kmkii. Both are great cameras depending on what your shooting with.

For my use, I use the 5D mkii for mainly studio work and low light situation. I prefer the 7D for family pics and non-low light events.

My personal feeling is that the only thing that the 5D mkii has is better low-light performance, narrower DOF and slight IQ advantage cause of the full-frame sensor. The 7D wins in every other department.

My feeling on the 24-70 F2.8 vs 24-105 F4 IS is that I prefer the 3 stop of IS and wider range of focal length available to me than the one extra stop of light. I don't do weddings but if I'm shooting at ISO3200 with both lens, I'm capable of hand holding the camera to lighting conditions of EV3 @105mm vs EV4-5ish @ 70mm. This does assume that I don't have to worry about stopping the action.

However, when I'm doing low-light non-flash photography event, I normally use a fast fixed focal lens like a 35mm F1.4 or 50mm F1.4.

don't forget! low light also depends on your lens!

when i shoot at f1.4 and f2 with both 7D and 5D2.. i hardly use over iso1000 on both bodies!

Hi Alex

I'm curious .... what lens are you using now with your 40d?
