Hi all,

My friend is a volunteer at the MS Society in Mississauga (http://chapters.mssociety.ca/default.as ... ID=324&L=2). They're having an event on March 6 and are looking for a volunteer photographer to take photos during the event.

If anyone is interested in helping out, please let me know.

Thanks!
Wendy

How many volunteers are they look for?

I think this would be fun to go as 2 or 3 TPMGer's

I would be interested plus I can do a bit of video with my 7D and my shiny new glidetrack :)

You can't trade services - only goods.

What kind of event is it? What kind of photos are they looking for? I actually may be interested as well (although I have never taken photographs for an event before so I would be ok helping out as long as there was another one or two people more experienced).

Cheers,

Jordan

Give them a CD with images and rights to use them.

Once you offer a CD, you are supposed to be collecting PST I think

If you donate an item which is what your business normally sells, and get a tax receipt for it, it is illegal in most cases. If the painting was created by you, or if your business is selling paintings, donating a painting and receiving a tax receipt would be considered as tax fraud.

I think the point of this law is to prevent charities from printing their own money in the forms of tax receipt.

Isn't that the loop hole those tax "places" used to get you more money in your tax refund for a "donation" to a Church/organization?

Not sure about that. OCAD does their WHODUNIT show every year, and if your donated piece of artwork sells, you get a $75 donation receipt.

I've been asked to donate stuff out rightly, which depending on what it is, and the organization, I might do for a legitimate not-for-profit. If its a large charity and they want something they should issue a receipt for the value. They do it all the time, sometimes people even donate stocks that have tanked, old vehicles, etc.

Also with whodunit, artists who donate larger pieces get the actually value in receipts from what I'm told.

yeah, I researched this topic a while ago and the answer I got was that business cannot donate their goods and get receipt for it.

the only way for business to donate goods and then receive a receipt was to declare the donation as income as well, which in essence is should cancel out the receipt from tax perspective.

maybe things are different now or I read the articles wrong, tax laws are always so confusing.

Thanks to those who generously volunteered their time, but my friend was able to find a photographer to help out.

It's good to know there are still some kind-hearted people in the GTA. :)

As an offshoot, have you ever seen a copy of the Income Tax Act? It's freaking humoungous. It is bigger than the Bible (Old Testament). I couldn't believe it when I saw a copy of it on a colleague's desk at work.

You can do what's called a check exchange.

You bill them for the services (which you declare as income), they pay, then you donate that amount back.
