Folks,
I am looking for some advice with regard to extenders. I am planning at trip to point Pelee to go birding but currently am limited in that I have a 70-200mm f/2.8. I've looked online and am trying find out whether or not I should simply go out an buy something with bigger range or will either a 1.4 or 2x extender facilitate the trip nicely.

Thanks in advance.

Daniel

I've never owned an extender but have used both extensively through a friend. I was not happy with the IQ loss nor the aperture loss. I think if you can do without the 2.8 speed there are many longer lens options for reasonable $$ these days.

Another option if you

A 70-200/2.8 with a 2x is quite slow in AF and you'll probably be disappointed in the quality. With a 1.4x, it won't be near long enough.

Try renting a lens, www.lenslenders.com which is Canadian, has the 100-400 for $129/week.

Thanks very much folks for your recommendations. I think based off of this renting a lens or buying a new one is the best way forward. Thanks :-)
