It seems face detection on P&S cameras are biased towards Caucasians:

more then caucasian people have "wider eyes". Its not racist its how it works im sure the mechanism somehow measures whiteness of eyes or however it works.. I think that sort of technology is dumb and pointless anyways .. who really cares about that stuff? I want a camera with face detection! please .. no reason to make a big deal out of .. Although its a tough one to work around the problem its facing i don't deem it a huge factor or "racist". Ironic thought Nikon being and asian oriented company .. I'm not asian so maybe my opinion is biased .. anyone else have a opinion??

Does the camera hate?
If not, it can't be racist.

If I say Chinese have smaller eyes, is that racist?
No
You need to look up what it means to be racist if you wanna have a discussion about racism.

Obviously, the camera is not racist.

The camera software designers, on the other hand, were probably remiss in their testing and/or were given instructions to design the software (face recognition) for faces that were not typically east asian.

Whether the instructions to exclude typical east asian faces in their recognition algorithm is directed by racism, is another matter which can only be settled by, perhaps, digging up internal company communication; clearly something that we as casual onlookers can only speculate.

Still, like the recent HP face recognition software failure to recognise dark-skinned people, these events surely make great ad copy and sell ads.

Oh boy...

I wonder when the lack of a "black balance" is going to surface? Surely if we hit the low mark, it could probably go lower.

I should add that I'm only pointing to the story because it is of interest...not that I have an opinion of it, either for or against what was said in the article.

I am a cyclist and I have never seen backpedalling that good. I am also black and your post and thread title are patently ridiculous.

If there are no faces and the face recognition software is on then my Fuji can find a face in a cabbage but I don't think it's Specieism :D Actually the newer software is trying to not only detect faces for focus but also judge if all the eyes are open. Not easy to do in a group shot.

I don't think it's racist, just lack of good algorithms.

I would imagine the software goes pixel by pixel calculating the percentage of skin, eyes, eyebrows, mouth, etc. It is easier to detect white skin simply because it tends to stand out more from most backgrounds and it's easier to detect where the eyes, eyebrows, mouth, etc because of the contrast in colour.

A dark skin person against a dark background in a poorly lit room is hard to detect, which is what happened in this case, he was in a poorly lit room. As stated in the article, the reverse would be true too. A white person (probably blond) in a very bright room against a bright background would also be hard to detect.

I'm a former cyclist (but can't anymore due to a leg injury)...who's "backpedaling"...I'm just clarifying my position. The subject heading, etc. are taken from the article, and not my own opinion!

This one is older but if anyone has not seen it, HP face detection is also racist:

The problem is that these cameras were rushed to market without good field testing.

I'm sure they were tested under proper lighting conditions and not the way real people shoot.

I'm black and native, so I'd be non-existent and walking around with my eyes shut.

I wouldn't buy a camera for the face recognition feature. They should just drop the whole thing. It's just embarrassing.
