I'm sure someone at some point will question it. But this is just for a little R&R so I may not use the roller since I won't be bring all my gear. Just a body and two lenses. I need to drop by Henry

I'm in the exact same boat as you I'll be flying down to Vegas through westjet with a 6month (at that time) I feb. Based on the CS lady/Website information I received. I can bring only 1 carry on/person - which will be my camera bag. The wife's purse will double as a diaper bag.

My own personal problem is how the heck do I deal with "the car seat" since My son will be a carry on and wont get a chair to sit on unless there is free space. Looks like it will have to be checked in with the luggages :(

My point was that as roller cases (implicitly for laptops) are explicitly called out as NOT allowed: http://www.catsa.gc.ca/file/library/71/ ... an10EN.pdf page 2,
That the minimum wage pre-screen checkers are going to, by default. question the bag automatically and you WILL have the hassle of a) identifying that it is for camera equipment and not a laptop or other prohibited use and b) trying to explain that it should be allowed under the "purpose designed cases" for camera equipment which does not differentiate between roller designed cases or non-roller cases.

You're absolutely right - how could I have been incorrect in reading your initial comment:

actually meant "roller cases (implicitly for laptops)" are not allowed (which is obvious by reading the PDF I linked you to).

Yet roller cases for cameras are allowed and I stated that one should bring this directive to the airport just in case such hassling occurs.

Clearly, if you are rolling with a Thinktank Airport Security (or International) and you go through the check and OPEN it (as the CATSA will ask you to do) then they will see that it's strictly built for camera gear.

Cheers,
Dave

We'll be checking the car seat as well and will buy an cheap umbrella stoller and gate check it.

From WestJet site...

"Extra baggage allowance: Guests travelling with infants may check in a car seat and stroller at no additional charge. A playpen may be substituted for either a car seat or stroller."

I'm scheduled to fly from Pearson to Los Angeles (LAX) on Feb. 04 for a convention. This was booked almost a year in advance, and don't have access to a car to drive to Buffalo so that was not an option for me.

I'll be carrying my 13" MacBook, two bodies, 3 lenses and two flashes in a Lowepro Computrekker Plus AW backpack. That was to be my only carry-on and it's strictly for my gear. I don't carry a purse (my valuables/passport/ID will be in one of those body money clip thingies which would be removed first anyway). Like many have said, there's no way can I afford to check my gear with luggage!

I'll still be nervous about what they may say about this set-up. I don't mind showing them everything works. I guess I can just tell them it's my "bread and butter"... :)

I'm also going to make that phone call to confirm this stuff is still okay by my travel date, and carry that PDF along. Thanks for posting it!

Thanks Sam! My Wife did say the CS rep told her she can do that - but I didn't want to take reps words for it. Now it's all legit I have less to worry about :)

OK we're somewhat back to normal and can bring 1 carry on bag plus a personal item.

Thanks for the notice. This makes life much easier. I don't have to smash all my electronics and wires in one camera bag.

Thanks! It was the first news item I woke up to. Just in time before my L.A. trip in 2 weeks. Whew! I'm still bringing the printout anyway.

anyone know how the "And one of the following:

* laptop computers and accessories in bags that contain no other items
* small purses no bigger than 25 cm x 30 cm x 14 cm (10 in. x 12 in. x 5.5 in.)
* cameras (both still and video) and accessories in bags that contain no other items"

passage applies to laptop/camera bags? one or the other really isn't an option, and my bag is slightly larger than their definition of a small purse.

I got back from Vegas last week and carry-on's weren't that closely monitored (westjet).

I took my camera bag on, wife took her bag + another bag with snacks/baby supplies. My parents took on two bags each with random stuff.

On the way back I had two carry-on also - It looked like as long as it was under two items we were fine. They are still VERY strict with liquids though and two Alien Bees went on as carry-ons without a problem.
