This started in the other thread and I think we should have a separate thread so that more people will notice and join.

We are planning a group buy of the new lens. When it is available for pre-order, we will go to one of the camera shops well known for good prices such as Golden Electronic, Amazing Photos and Aden (they are all Canon autorized dealers) to negotiate for a discount price for the group buy.

Do you know what the price is?

Hope it is not $3500 as listed here:

Nobody knows. Note the comment on that site:

Please Note: The price has not been released by Canon yet. We will add the correct price to our website once we are given official pricing from Canon Canada.

No one knows the price yet. I guess when the OP gets enough people then they can get the price from the store.

Where do you see that price? Can you provide a link. When it is available to be ordered at the stores then we will go and negotiate for a price as a group. So the more the better.

I called Henrys yesterday and they said they are expecting to know the price within a week but not expect to have the lens for another month or so.

I think Henrys is misquoting the arrival time. The street date is supposedly April. Just waiting to see some more reviews and sample images to base my final decision...

I am having second thoughts about this. Not sure if I want to be the first in line to buy this lens. The money could cover a 70-200 f4 IS plus the 100mm macro IS with some change. I might wait to see the review and then wait for one in the used market.

I have the 70-200 f2.8 IS (I guess Mk1 now?) and shooting wide open at 2.8 with that nice bokeh I'm happy I bought it rather than the 70-200 f4 IS.

I was chatting with a pro shooter covering the Aussie Open on another forum. He said he was given a MK II to try out. First few things he said he noticed was that IS noise was very quiet and no "buzzing" feeling when IS is working like you get with other IS lenses.

Optically he said he didn't notice (if any) difference between the MKI and MKII in "real" world shooting. I'm hearing approx $2400.CDN. If that's the case, I'm more than happy to settle for a MKI. I'm sure there'll be lots of used ones for sale once the MKII hits the shelves.

If it is only for a quieter IS then I am not going to upgrade. I owned the f2.8 IS before and really liked it. I will have to wait and see the review of the new lens.

I have been toying with the idea of getting the 70-200 f2.8 IS lens for a while now. It is expensive but once I tried it and saw the difference in quality I realized that it is a must have. Ever since I found out about the new one coming out I decided to wait. I am still not sure what I will do.
If the price is reasonable I will perhaps get the MKII if not then I guess I can pickup the older less expensive version that is still an amazing piece of equipment that I will cherish for many years to come. :?:

From one of my supplier manager that I spoke to. They are setting the pre-release price to $4,865.09 Canadian on the new lens. I think it's not gonna be too far off when the release date come closer. It's quite pricy I know.

I think that price +/- $500 is crazy. Can't possibly be close to correct.

It is unlikely that it would be that high. If it is then the MKI looks very attractive.

it's a pre-release price. I certainly hope that I'm wrong in this case.

I call complete bull. There's no way this lens costs as much as a 300mm 2.8 IS.

At that price, they can keep them as door stops at Canon offices. :P

Found this just now. Should be "more" accurate than my previous prediction. :P

Quote:
Canon Japan have announced a price for the Canon EF 70-200/2.8L IS II USM, 300,000 Yen. At the current exchange rate the $US equivalent would be $3300. However don't panic as the price of the lens in the US should be much lower. The Japanese price on the original EF 70-200/2.8L IS USM is 280,000 Yen which would correspond to $3080, yet the list price in the US is only $1999, 65% of the direct currency conversion and the street price is closer to $1725.

The price increase of the MkII over the original version in Japan is around 7%, so the equivalent increase in the US list price would be $140 on a $1999 lens, or around $2140. I'd therefore expect a list price (and probable initial street price) around $2150 and in time that should drop to something closer to $1900.

As far as I know Canon USA have not officially announced the price of the EF 70-200/2.8L IS USM but it should be pretty close to $2150 as Japanese and US prices usually follow a similar pattern. The non-IS version of the 70-200/2.8L USM lists for 204,000 Yen ($2245). If the same 65% factor applies to the non-IS lens as it does to the IS lens, that would predict a US price of $1460. The actual US list price is $1449, pretty close, so the 65% factor seems like a good number!

Ahh, thanks for the heads up. Getting closer to a US pricing I would assume since Japan made their announcement official.

There was no way it was going to be around the cost of a 300mm f2.8IS prime. That would be insane.

Wow at that price, it makes me want to switch over to Nikon.
