Another essential: remember to bring the FERRY SCHEDULE to avoid those last minute dashes followed by a freezing wait as you watch the ferry depart minutes before you get back to the dock.

Long Johns highly advised.

Cause we all know how sexy flannel is in a Canadian winter...

Hi Tim,
What do you think, what time will we catch the ferry back? I understand that it will be your first "official debut" ;-) So I'll try to go to celebrate it, but can't be sure yet.
Thanks.

Assume we try for a cityscape and maybe even a sunset, with dinner to follow on the mainland after the sun is long gone, if previous experience has anything to say.

The weather for Saturday is looking good so far. Cold but sunny periods.
Also the Rectory Cafe is open 11 am to 5 pm for those that might need a cup
of tea and some warmth :)
Sunset is aproxx 5pm so depending on where we shoot it from, then walk to Olympic Island for some skyline shots and maybe toasted marshmellows
it could be the 7:15 or 8:15 ferry back to town for some food and drink :)
That should make everyone get a good nights sleep afterwards :)

So charge you batteries, (bring extras) , dress warm with extra socks mitts and hats and scarves and water and snacks.
Don't forget a tripod for shooting at dusk unless you have a 5D MKII
or D3x then feel free to hand hold at 600000000 iso :)

Tim

I am new to winter photography...is there any truth to batteries not lasting as long in the cold?

Never had a problem with camera battery, shot quite a bit in -20C last winter, but my Yongnuo trigger stopped working in -11 or -17 yesterday
Just put your camera in the bag if you're not shooting.

I may be able to make it this time. Looking forward to it. I checked the sunset info with TPE and here is the Jan 9 info :
Image

Looks like the sun is setting to the south south west, we wont have the sun setting over the cityscape but we should still have a pretty sky if the weather holds out.

That may call for some rescue effort :P I don't even know if I can last for 5 hours outdoor with a parka & gloves.

I am new to winter photography as well, someone at the social talked about ways to avoid lens freezing but I didn't hear the details. Any tips on that?

Many layers and 6 hour chemical heat packs in your gloves and maybe your boots. Personally spending 2 hours at the cafe until the light is better works for me. :D The weather is looking to be cold and sunny.

We tend to keep moving during the day, so that keeps us warm. The cold set in when we stopped for the sunset, but this time we have the fire... right?

It won't be so cold that you lens should freeze if it's a quality lens. Unless you get it wet.
The only thing to be mindful of is transitioning from hot to cold and the change in humidity. Experts recommend a ziplock bag to maintain the humidity levels around the camera, but generally just leaving it in your bag to acclimitise should be good enough.

As for lens freezing up, people usually give up before the lens' do :)
The only precautions would be to keep your camera dry.
If you get snow on it, don't blow the snow off with your breath as that will melt it on the camera, just dust it off with a cloth or your mitts.
Also when entering a warm, humid place, like the coffee shop, it is best to put
your camera away in it's bag before entering the shop to prevent condensation.

The tentative plan so far is to walk around Wards island down to the south shore then back up through the houses and passing the cafe, on to the pier
then back through centre ville to olympic for sunset.
The sun doesn't set behind the city but the colours are reflected from the buildings during a nice sunset.

Also feel free to ask questions while you are there. Some one should be able to point you in the right direction :)

Tim

p.s. Don't forget that you don't have to stay for the whole event.
We will let people leave if and when they are frozen solid :)
So if you want to show up and follow the gang around for a while and not do the sunset that is fine too.

I think a little more than 1/2 hour. Could probably leave at 6 to catch the 6:45. Sunset is at 5pm so to shoot the city after I don't think you would make the 5:45

Neat program now I know when to shoot sunset in the beaches and the docks. Al it need s is long range weather forecasting. Too bad there isn't an online gps driven version for my phone.

Last year it started getting dark around 5:00, was getting fairly dark by 5:20, and my last pic on Olympic Island was 5:40. Then I took some shots waiting for the ferry at 6:35. There was some packing up and chatting, so the in-between time was not all walking, but it gives an idea of the length of the walk back to the ferry dock. My GPS says it is 3.2km and a 38 min walk.

Last year we did it on Jan 3, so this year being a week later will get 5 min more daylight. Civil twilight shown as 5:31 on the image in one of the posts above is line between "it's getting dark" and "it is dark". 8)
