I think point of impact makes a great difference. But I'm glad no one got hit on the head with those cameras.

Looks like the Canon fell in some soft muddy area. Looks like the sony dropped in dry area. So that could've affected what happened to the Canon. 1 Km drop is still insane though.

Looks like terminal velocity could be around 200km/h. Still, with that much speed, only a finicky zoom and a cracked case is pretty impressive. Try that with the human body, you'd probably be dead!

Don't forget that even soft water is like concrete at terminal velocity. I suspect the dslr landed with the mounting plate hitting first cameras are pretty strong around the tripod mounting area and the plate would have spread the load or if there is any justice the DSLR fall was cushioned by the video camera. Other thing if it landed on the side of even a small hill it could have hit at an angle. Don't ask me how I know but I've seen far larger things fall out of an aircraft and survive.

Amazingly, the record for SURVIVED no-parachute fall is over 10km.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vesna_Vulović

There are a surpising number of people who have survived falls of over 3000m (well, surprising if you assume like I did that no-one would have)
