I have a d80 and a sb 600 flash. As of now, I am thinking of buying another flash just to give me more options to manipulate light. I don't have that much $$ to get another flash so these are my two options: SB 80dx or SB 28dx.

I read on some forums that these flash guns doesn't do ittl. But if i only need it as a fill light or extra lighting then I guess it wouldn't matter that much. I can always use my sb 600 as my key. My questions are:

1. if either of these can be operated by the commander built in flash
together with the sb 600?

2. if #1 is possible, am I able to use my sb 600 on ttl mode on the first
channel and the sb 80dx or sb 28dx on the second channel as manual?

I appreciate all replies.

Thanks!

I am by no means a Nikon flash expert, but based on what I understand you should be able to use your D80's pop up flash to trigger both the SB-600 and other flash (be it the SB-28DX or SB-80DX) so long as the SB-600 and other flash are on the same channel.

If the flashes are on different channels, only one flash will fire I believe.

Honestly... the SB80 sucked. The 800 is worlds ahead, and you can get them cheaply now. Its worth spending the extra bucks.

No, it can't be done. SB28DX and SB80DX can only be triggered remotely in SU-4 mode, meaning manual optical slave only. No wireless commander channel/group.

Oh ya, thanks for saying that.... both of those flashes were from the era pre-CLS. Only the newer generation of flashes work with CLS.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'd probably will keep my money for a while until I can purchase another 600 or an 800 if I get enough!

For myself, no iTTL support from sb-80dx would top my "what is so bad about the sb-80dx" list.

Where can you get them cheaply? I've been looking and they are going OVER their original selling price brand new due to the high demand!

Bought both of mine for under 100 bucks.

Light years ahead of the SB28s. Just the built in optical trigger alone is worth the wait and hunt.

D-TTL was absolutely atrocious in performance. Otherwise it's an excellent flash and I'd not hesitate to recommend it to film Nikon users or strobists.
