what we're going to do is to shoot portraits of random strangers, and make use of controlled lighting sources.

Diverse enough definition? :)

Works for me, lol.

Sure, even better, you can help drum up business by being our model so you'd attract peoples' attention. :)

Hi Mike, so what would be the setup here? are we gonna have a few strobe set up on a stands and then a remote controller firing it, being controlled by different cameras?

coz I got only one flash a 580 II, I don't have a remote controller so it will be attached to my camera body. Otherwise we can use my flash as a slave and me as a light stand. :))

Regards,'
LJ

ok, so Yorkville park is pretty highly trafficked, at least in the fall, and I'm hoping that that day will not be too cold and/or raining/snowing, although snow could be interesting to shoot in.

My plan is that we'd look for a quiet corner to get set up, just away from the main thoroughfare but still within distance to attract curious people. Depending on gear people will bring, we will have 1,2, or 3 light setups. If you don't have remote triggers, you can probably borrow from someone who does and then we'll all be in business. I'd avoid using the flash on-camera, as that would not give good results.

I'd like to avoid paparazzi style 4-5 shooters to 1 subject kind of shoot, aiming instead for a more intimate 1 (at most 2) photographer to 1 subject ratio. So, depending on how many turn up that day, we'd have anything from 1-4 stations spread out over the park and surrounding areas.

After we're done shooting, we could go eat at one of the many restaurants around the place!

Sound good?

Sounds like a plan Mike. Weather permitting.

I wish to avoid setting up a station and having the same background for every shot. I'm going to keep mobile with a hand held softbox. I'm looking for sparkly out of focus lights in the background. Would Yorkville park be mostly a black (boring) background? It's probably too early for Christmas lights.

well, yeah, I thought it would be good if we could take turns being voice operated lightstands; and we definitely need not be limited to Yorkville park. I am not completely certain, but Yorkville being consumption central, I think there should be some festive lights; Nov 21 is already about a month away from the birthday of the fat man in the red suit :D Worst case scenario, we could always sprawl out to Bloor Street, and the vehicle lights can help.

Maybe one of these days I'll go take a walk to see the photographic potential. Maybe.

went to have a quick look on the way home today. Shop displays are coming up. Here's how some parts look today:

but i'm a little confused in terms of what to tell her for what to expect.

your pitch?

Erm, what would she like to know?

Tell her we'll take pictures of her in a street setting, around dusk and into the early evening. Tell her we're aiming for pictures that express the mood of the season

May I suggest a suitcase full of clothing accessories (hats, jackets). Trying different outfits/locations should keep us busy for a while. Oh - and if she has a boyfriend to look happy with, bring him along. I'd love to get some happy couple shots (shopping, holding hands walking, laughing).

Regarding my previous comment about sparly lights - I was actually thinking about dusk/night shots. So while interested in that, I do realise we're starting at 3:30ish.

That tunnel walkway looks cool - I havn't seen that.

Yeah, I was thinking of dusk/night shots too, but I thought that some camera AF systems might have difficulty in the dark, so we should maximise chances for keepers by having more light. Plus, we'd probably take about half an hour to get into the swing of things, which puts us into the good lighting of sunset.

Though I only had 5 spots open, it was mostly because I did not want too many photographers to intimidate any passers-by. I guess we could always break into small groups if we have many people.

So, mlbsport, you are certainly welcome. :)

I'm going to suggest that we meet at 4pm instead. 3:30 may be a little early.

Hey Mike,

My model friend won't be available on Saturday... sorry. But no worries, I'm sure we'll be able to convince a few lovely people to model for us. Just entice them with your charisma!

I just bought a new portrait lens for my D60, so I'm gonna take my little guy for a spin :D We should make a competition out of this... make it a little more extroverted and exciting.

Great! even better, bring a friend or two who might want their portraits taken. Dunno, maybe for their FB profile?

Thanks everybody for coming. It was a wonderful evening, mild weather and very sporting, cooperative people who gamely posed for us, not to mention a few who were quite, shall we say, enthusiastic?

After a quick, minimal processing, my set is here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mike-tan/s ... 726701905/

My pick for the evening (someone help tell me what to do to fix pimpled skin):
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mike-tan/4123087963/" title="IMG_2651 by mike.tan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2507/4123087963_e4cacc2b20_o.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_2651"></a>

We even managed to see a fairly rare(?) lens and its owner:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mike-tan/4123854506/" title="IMG_2486 by mike.tan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2650/4123854506_df49455a58.jpg" width="500" height="500" alt="IMG_2486"></a>

And the lesson for the evening: MAKE SURE YOUR LIGHTSTAND IS WEIGHTED DOWN WHEN OUTDOORS:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mike-tan/4123862072/" title="broken by mike.tan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2692/4123862072_e7be7e3a80.jpg" width="500" height="333" alt="broken"></a>
