I have a Nikon 70-180mm and need to purchase a plate for this lens so that I can use it on an AS style clamp so I'm considering the RRS custom plate for this lens. It looks from a mechanical point of view that it may add a little extra support at the back of the foot; there seems to be a fitted "ridge" that might help stabilize it. Aside from this ridge, I don't see any other benefit from this plate compared to a flat universal plate.
Does anyone have any experience with this plate? Any comments?
I have the RRS plate for my Canon 70-200 4.0 IS and the little ridge keeps it from rotating on the mount. It also has a set screw that prevents it from sliding out the other end of the clamp. Finally, it has a thread that underneatch would allow you to screw another plate, like a Manfrotto in a pinch, in the event your tripod was not around.
