Considering the number of photography students there must be, why aren't there more of them on TPMG?

I'm a BA student and a working photographer.... though I'm pursuing a degree in environmental and resource studies and women's studies, so I guess that's not exactly what you meant.

I'm from Halifax and am on the local forum for Halifax as well and it's the same situation. Even with photography programs at NSCADU and the community college, there are few to none on the forums.

However, I am not surprised that there aren't many students from OCAD and other art oriented schools as this forum is very oriented towards technology, gear and spending - not something that many students can afford to do with such high tuition fees. This tech obsession and forum are also VERY male-oriented and as such I find many more fellow women photographers and students on more art oriented websites and forums as they are more inclusive spaces.

I guess one of the main goals of the group is to meet other photographers. If you were studying photography you would probably already have a posse of photographer friends to hang out with.

Also, a lot of the discussion on the forum seems to be centered around gear.

I'm starving.... but then I ate a beef pie, and its all good now. I am not really a student anymore.... more like the teacher now. Just starting to teach intro to photography in the last couple of years. Did a street photography workshop recently. Lots of fun. Quite a different learning curve!

i guess regarding OCAD technology is considered taboo, thats why the chromogenic machine is still running full steam... and digital for them is still only on the horizon :P

yah its true...

but also the fact that this group is aimed at photography as fun might mistakenly scare them/us (however i would state this) off. If photography is what you do, then go home & do some more as homework, sometimes you want to put it down & do something else for fun...

Yet that's what i do for fun.

So where do photography students share their work online? Is there a certain elitism and "not mingling with the amateurs" feeling amongst students?

I think the Ryerson website has portfolio space for their full time students to show off their stuff. Many students have their own websites I would expect.

As a side note, if I was younger, I would think seriously about pursuing a photography degree. I thought about it back in high school but didn't have the guts.

From my perspective, it seems there are good distinctions amongst groups of photographers. I guess there are cliques.

I'd assume students hoping to share their work find a more receptive crowd/atmosphere on Flickr. This is more gear oriented site.

um there is nothing to learn about photography.

The triangle only has 3 corner Aperture, Shutter, and ISO just pick a combination how hard can it be. Beside you learn about Triangle in Pre-school it is not rocket science

hehhee

With some of the new DSLRs ISO is becoming redundant so the triangle has collapsed to a short line, but you don't see them dropping the price of the courses
