Wow... really hits a mark.

I know an ex-photojournalist that quit doing it. He said it takes a "special" someone to cover stories like that without getting emotionally caught up dealing with personal moral values like feeling the need to interact and help. You're basically taking pictures of someone at the lowest point of their lives and making money doing so.

He said he was shooting someone attempting to commit suicide from jumping off a building, along with a number of other photographers. When the person eventually did jump to his death, the first thing some of the other photographers asked was "WOW! Did you get the bounce?!"

I'm told that by looking through the viewfinder, it helps diffuse the reality of the situation.
