Hi all,

I'm heading out to Nova Scotia on Friday and I was wondering if anyone has any tips on great photo spots.

I'm flying in to Halifax and from there I'll be driving out to Peggy's Cove.
Then I will hug the coast as much as possible as I travel east. I'll eventually do all of the Cabot Trail and then spend some time driving around the Northumberland and Bay of Fundy area.

I'm hoping to get those really nice coastal shots. I'm thinking rugged cliffs, rocky shores etc. Does anyone know of any specific spots along this route that will give me what I'm looking for?

I was hoping that I'd be able to stumble upon a nice shot but I think getting advice may be better :p

Thanks!

Zeekid

You pretty well captured it. I went there about 8-9 years ago and went to the hopewell rocks at the wrong time so the tide was up. Cabot Trail, the scenery is awesome, if you're up for a hike, do the skyline trail. At that time, a lot of the trail near the end was closed as they were in the process of building a wooden walkway due to the erosion.

I think the problem I had back then was that I didn't stop enough to check out the scenery, mind you, photography wasn't one of my hobbies back then.

Oh if you wanted rugged cliffs and such, a buddy from out east says that it's Newfoundland if you want this, but it adds quite a bit of time to the trip if you take the ferry there.

Hi Zeekid

I used to live down there so will try to put something together tonight.
Going around the Cabbot Trail, go counter clockwise so
as to be on the outside of the road. Better view while driving :)
Also if you go to BAy of Fundy stop in to the Fundy Geological Museum
and tell the curator I sent you. You will then get a personal
tour if he is not busy and he knows lots of local spots.
His name is Ken Adams.

That's a coincidence - I'm going to Nova Scotia on Friday as well. Tim, I'll take those suggestions too. I have already booked my accommodation in such a way that I have to do the Cabot Trail clockwise - I read after booking that going counterclockwise was preferable. The Bay of Fundy isn't on my itinerary.

That's coincidence #2. I'll be going there as well, not this Friday though. I hope you post some tips in this thread, since I'll be right behind you. We'll be driving all the way there, and would also need some advice on which route to take.

If you go to Muncton New Brunswick make sure to check out Magnetic Hill. The park would be close for the season but you can still drive in and check out the hill. You park at the bottom of the hill, put in neutral and you'll be pulled up the hill. Not a photo op, but cool to check out if you're near by.

Have fun.

We use to go there all the time during our family vacation back home. Back then, it use to just be the hill. Now it's like this whole mini amusement park.

Another family spot was the flower pots in NB. Depending on tide, you can walk all around/underneath them.

You should also plan to stop right at the NS border, as they use to have a bag pipe player in full costume playing in the summers. And they have a gift shop too, so you can buy your own kilt or macpuffin if you were so inclined! :)

As for coastal shots, my memories of NS and Cabot Trail have all been luxurious green hills meeting up with deep blue water. Not much rugged cliffs as opposed to the Rockies. But you'll still have some fantastic photo ops. I'm jealous!

Thanks for all of the tips and comments.

I'm pretty excited for this trip. It'll be nice to see another part of Canada.

If you're looking for some ideas, here's a writeup of the east coast (Nova Scotia included) motorcycle tour my wife and I did earlier this summer:

Hey zeekid,

nova scotia is a fantastic and beautiful place. i spent an entire month in moncton for french imemrsion and got to travel around and see all the sights. hopewell rocks is something nice to see, but make sure you check the tide calendar. if the tide is high then you'll see nothing :) bay of fundy was beautiful. the whole park is HUGE and i don't think you'll have enough time to do the whole thing. there are a few trails with some nice foliage and waterfalls that are not TOO long (~20 minutes). peggy's cove is also really stunning to see, as well as the little city around the cove - has a nice fisherman feeling to it. i never had time to do the cabot trail though, but according to locals, its one of the most visited places during the fall.
