I've been thinking of getting one for the quick photo and for videos (preferably 720p at a minimum). Haven't really kept in touch with what's out there in the P&S market but a buddy mentioned the Lumix DMC-ZS3.

Anybody else have recommendations? Maybe about $500ish would be my budget.

I know that a separate one will be better but looking for an all-in-one solution for ease/portability.

The ZS3 is likely the best p&s out there with HD video for that budget.

The LX3 is very nice, but will be well over $600- with taxes.

Another good choice would be the Pany TS1 which is waterproof.

Several of the Canon SD series also offer HD video.

I bought a Canon SX1 for this same purpose. I got nervous carting around the DSLR and L lenses on my motorcycle so I picked up the SX1 for video (1080p at 30fps) and 20x optical zoom plus IS. Instead of a CCD it has a CMOS and Digic 4.

This was shot with the SX1

and this

Do you have a bigger resolution of those 2 videos? The video is too small to justify its capabilities.

oh, the frog is huge and the bikers are fairly skilled... I miss riding on bikes!

I have the original HD videos but it takes too long to upload. 13mins of video is about 4GB.

I picked up a Lumix TZ5 last summer, I know its a little old today, but I love it. Great pictures, great video, 10x optical zoom. I just realized the ZS3 is also known as the "TZ7", the successor of my camera. It's definitely got my vote. If you want to play with the TZ5 I'm happy to meet up.

Is low light performance an issue, I'm no expert but I think maybe the dedicated HD recorder will have superior low light performance compared to P&S. Better to look into it now, than saying damn later.

Make sure to get a camera that can optically zoom while recording video. And image stabilization is a must.
