Not sure if anyone's posted this yet, but here's an interesting article on the concept of an open source digital camera:

Frankencamera

Enjoy!

You know.. I was just saying last week that the next step in technology will be to develop a camera which can do "in camera" HDR processing.... this would be the ultimate option, and I'd buy a camera with that ability.

Soon, you'll be able to play Tetris on your camera!

I have been wondering why no one has done this yet. Great article.

I wish camera manufacturers wouldn't lock down the firmware/software and would instead provide an API for accessing and programming the camera. I would KILL for something like this. There would definitely be people programming apps like "tetris" but for me I would love to add my own custom tricks to the camera itself. Like someone mentioned before, you could program a setting for HDR, whether it be to do the actual in camera HDR processing (i think a bit too intensive for camera cpu, but still :) ) or even setting it up to take X number of shots at a specified exposure, etc.

Hopefully other manufacturers take this as a cue.

Um... Sony a500 and a550 announced last week have an HDR mode... though I have no idea how well it performs on this front as of yet :)

The opportunities with the firmware open for people to tinker with and modify is almost without boundaries. Look at the early Canon Digital Rebel, where the firmware was hacked to bring in other customizable features that weren't available with the factory firmware. Later people found a way to run apps off the memory card with the more recent Canon cameras which opened up other opportunities (ie.: Magic Lantern for the 5DMrkII).

Well, I am not jumping ship and going Sony... but when Nikon bring's out a body with the HDR function, and it works properly, then I'd definately consider it. For now, Photomatix works.
