Besides being against the forum rules it is not very smart to post it in the same thread.

I don't think it is unethical. He got a deal because of a pricing error -- good for him. If he can make some bucks and still sell it at a lower price than anyone else, why is this bad?

Not unethical at all. Still cheaper than buying elsewhere. And they are not really bumping the price up that much. By the time they paid the taxes on what they paid. The are not making a huge profit. It's fair.

I wouldn't say it is unethical, but I think behaviour like this should not be welcome in this community.

We exist as a group to enjoy taking pictures together, and perhaps to help one another save money (e.g. in group purchases) so that we can better enjoy taking more pictures.

It could be possible that upon the impulse purchase of the lens, he changed his mind, and wanted to sell it at a good price (compared to MSRP) to the rest of the group.

Or, it could be that he opportunistically purchased a copy with no intention of using it for himself, but to sell it at a profit instead.

We wouldn't know. But for the benefit of members, we should not second guess; therefore we should not allow plausibly profit-driven sales like this.

Ultimately, if anyone thinks it's a good deal, and buys it anyway, I guess that's their prerogative. But it must be with full disclosure, and as a community, we should discourage sales like this.

The Black's deal was at $580. After taxes, that would be $655. Counting in the effort to go get it, perhaps $700. Asking $750 and profiteering from fellow members on the forum is not a good idea. I wouldn't say it is unethical, but it definitely does not help build a strong community. This is not, after all, craigslist or some sale site.

Even if it were CL or some such, I personally would not feel good purchasing under such circumstances.

I don't think ethics come's into play. He's not really ripping anyone off (as it's still a less than the price of a new one) or misleading anyone. If i didn't post about this sale, then I'm sure someone would have picked it up for a BNIB at that price.

Although in good faith he could have offered it at cost+ a marginal amount to recoup time / money spent on it. I don't think he bought it to make money, more of buyers remorse (who on this forum WOULDN'T keep the 17-40 at this price??)

p.s. I did get mine and I'm loving it! Nicely compliments my 24-105 which I find too wide on my 40D and perfect upgrade route to the next FF!

I agree. I think there's a cost associated with finding the deal, driving to pick it up, and spending your time doing that. A $100 mark-up or whatever it is isn't bad at all for the effort, and he isn't trying to hide the fact he got it at this deal.

just go to craigslist or kijiji or ebay, or even selling tread here, no need to rub people's face in it

I think the reason he posted it here is that people who wanted to get it in the first place were checking this thread.
having said that, this discussion isn't really going anywhere and anyone that was interested in the lens to begin with has probably already seen that you're selling it so if you haven't sold it yet I suggest starting a thread, as PotatoEYE suggested in the selling section of the forum

but everyone in this thread isnt looking for a 17-40L, they are looking for a good deal on a L lense

if there wasnt a sale i'm pretty sure 90% of the people here would not even consider buying the 17-40

so posting his sale here is basically useless unless he is selling closer to the sale price

should just make a thread in the for sale section

i called black's on monday morning, and a sales told me i can order it through a black's store at the discount price, but i hestated.

I heard a rumor that 17-40 is going to have a new version coming in an year since all Canon's wide angle lens have already be upgraded to version II. therefore, I thought it'a inventory clean out event.

When I finally decided to go to blacks, they already had removed special price from the website.

but a person watching a hockey team for 10 years doesnt make them part of the team...

if the person doesn't contribute to the community are they really part of the community? or just an outsider who likes to read/watch from the sidelines

Still good for anyone who really wants a newer copy of that lens. If this had happened 4 weeks ago (when I did buy one from Vistek -- who price matched Aden at time of purchase), I would've been happy to buy it off him. So I think its a good thing, but agree that he should've posted it in a Sales thread.

As long as it is the seller has acquired the item legally, I would support any actions that could save me money.

Communties should include everyone. That's the idea behind community. Include everyone or at least try to. Regardless if they take part in things or not. It's the job of the community to take in people and help them feel a part of the communtiy and
not exclude them because they "watch
from the sideline ".....how the heck did this
thread get to this point anyhow? What this
person is doing is totally fair. Not gouging or doing anything wrong. I think people might be turned if by this because they did not get the deal. Let it
go! LOL this is getting out of hand now. All this talk about profiteering ,gouging, not being part of the communtiy. This us nuts. Besides when someone sells stuff on here in the buy and sell section. Are they not profiting ? You sell something. You get money. Again. Kill this thread. Let it go!!!!!

i'm just saying that there are people who treat our site as just another means to sell their equipment just like craigslist

i've seen people post random stuff just to get the minimum posts required to post in the buy & sell

and most times when people are selling in the buy & sell they are not making a profit but clearly this person is making a huge profit

if it was me and i didnt like the 17-40L, i would sell it for what i paid + gas or something small...

i mean...he didnt even own the lens for a week...so obviously it was bought with the intention to sell it for a higher price

And I don't see anything wrong with that. As a buyer, it would still save me money (since I missed the deal), and I'd be happy to save money especially on a lens I know is new.

Nice sentiments about "community" but I think THAT tpmg died a while ago when we started elitist events and segregated socials. I find it odd that there is relatively little said against that sort of practise yet there is much said about a supply/demand based sale opportunity.

I do appreciate the OP's effort in informing us of this deal - that was nice.
