Details:

What: Sainte-Marie among the Hurons & Discovery Harbour
When: Saturday August 1, 2009
Time: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Where: Midland/Penetanguishene, Ontario, meet in the Parking lot at Discovery Harbour
Bring: cameras, etc.

Sainte-Marie among the Hurons is a recreated, 17th century French Jesuit mission headquarters and Discovery Harbour is a recreated, 19th century military community including two replica sailing ships. Both attractions are within a 20 minutes of each other so going to both should not be difficult.

Entry fee for Sainte-Marie among the Hurons is $11.25 and for Discovery Harbour it is $6.00. But, we get 50% of the entry to Sainte-Marie among the Hurons by going to Discovery Harbour first (hold on to your receipt).

If you need a ride or can offer a ride put it in your post and make the necessary arrangements.

The itinerary is:
Arrive at Discovery harbour at 10:00 AM
Visit and photograph until approximately 12:00 PM
Travel to Sainte-Marie among the Hurons (20 minutes)
Have lunch at the restaurant at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons
Tour and photograph at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons until 5:00 PM (closing time)
We can discuss if we want to have dinner or just head for TO

Directions (from website):
Coming from Toronto, follow Hwy. 400 North to Hwy. 93. Take Hwy. 93 north directly to Penetanguishene (Hwy 93 turns into Penetanguishene's main street). Take the main street to the bottom of the hill towards the water, turn right and follow the Blue Ship logos to Discovery Harbour.

(note: Although most GPS and the directions on the web site say to use 93, I plan to go up 400 all the way to 12 and across to 93)

To go to Sainte-Marie among the Hurons we return to Hwy 12 and go east to the entrance which is is across from the Martyrs' Shrine Church.

Travel time to Discovery Harbour from Toronto is approximately 1 hour 45 min.

 public transit? probably not

I'd like to go, need a ride, coming from Etobicoke (can travel by subway or ttc to pick-up location)

I was up in Midland/Penetanguishene couple of weeks ago for a workshop. Did visit the Discovery Harbor but did not get time to go inside. I would like to visit again, but I am tied-up this weekend, so cant make it.

For those who are trying to make up the their mind, here is a teaser :) Looking forward to pics from your trip.

Not a lot off interest in this event. Maybe it is the long weekend.

Oh well the weather looks good so far. I will post Friday late afternoon or early evening if the weather forecast goes bad and I cancel, so check it out.

OK, weather looks OK. Not as nice as a day ago, but the rain is not supposed to arrive until late evening. Lets hope Environment Canada can get it right for a change. So a mix of sun and cloud during the day, which is good for photography.

So we are ON!

See you tomorrow in the past  ,
Daryl

Looks that way. Guess the long weekend/Carabana Weekend wasn't the best choice for this event.

Would there be room for one more person?

I know it's late - I was not sure if I was going to have to work on Saturday but I am off now.

I at North York Centre but can meet up anywhere along the TTC Subway line.

Thanks:-)

Neil.

Wow, sorry PixlGeek, didn't see your post until I was leaving this morning at 7:00 AM. Could have squeezed you in, but it was too late :( .

Thanks to everyone who came out! It was a great day for photography, very nice weather, excellent company and good conversation. Sorry I was late, but that 400 can be a nightmare sometimes.

:D :D :D :D

Any cool pics to share from those two sites? Thanks. I'm thinking of heading out tomorrow even though the weather doesn't look too promising.

Nice pic, sapg! I dropped by Discovery Harbour on a late Sunday. It was a beautiful and relaxing place. Will go back again to do the tour.
