My First attempt at HDR. I found I got a lot of ghosts in the image...done with CS3:

Very nice and subtle use of HDR. Maybe the ghosting is the result of thee images not being correctly aligned. I get similar ghosting with a panoramic when I move the camera too far off axis.

I'd like to see the non-HDR version of it to compare.

Really nice shot Miguel.

I must say I am starting to come to the opinion that some of the best HDR use is where the dynamic range is being stretched slightly but not fantastically so, i.e. it is subtle. I think we perceive when an image does not match our real world visual experience. The human eye has a far higher dynamic range than the common image capture and display mediums we use, but takes a small amount of time to recalibrate itself, think walking outside on a bright sunny day from a dim interior or vice versa. When an image allows the eye to track through 'dynamic ranges' that it would normally need a bit of time to adjust for it looks/feels false, when those ranges are close to what they eye can do then it seems more realistic. It is another tool for expression and those who deride it are just depriving themselves of a tool and those who expound its use in every situation are ignoring its limitations. Glad to see many nice examples of its use.

Interested in finding out why you call your shots unconventional HDR?

well, they are conventional HDR, but applied to an unconventional subject  rarely see just clouds in HDR, not part of landscape. Nothing extraordinary :)

Carlton I really like you second image except maybe you could fix the clipped pieces of blue sky to make it even better.

actually a trick to sucessful natural-looking HDR, with all the dynamic range expanded, is to smooth it out and sometimes blend it in with other processing or original  simply converting and tonemapping rarely creates pleasantly looking photoes, however every rule has exceptions

Yeah I agree. The lighting was pretty difficult and with 5 frames I still had blown out skies. I think I needed to extend the bracketing by more stops.

I see most people still have a strong halo around edges, unless you particularly like the effect, I'd look into smoothing out shadows/highlights and microcontrast a little

I find HDR really helps with mono-chromatic scenes, like snow

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/fizbot/2175440924/" title="Limehouse Arch by pbruch, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2059/2175440924_1ceabf7be3_o.jpg" width="853" height="1280" alt="Limehouse Arch"></a>

Although it works just about anyplace you have that dynamic range to capture.
