If you want to see some very swirly bokeh, then check out http://www.largeformatphotography.info/ ... ostcount=6

Warning, it's NSFW.

Even tho I would say that this is horrible bokeh, the picture as a whole works.

WA lens can hardly have bokeh as its depth of field is usually huge compared with lens of longer focal length.

There seems to be general agreement as quoted from one of the Pentax thread that, for better bokeh,

1) Photographing at the minimum distance with the widest aperture allows the best bokeh.

2) Shooting wide open gives the best bokeh possible for any distance.

3) Larger aperture lenses are capable of delivering better bokeh than those with smaller maximum apertures.

4) The greater the separation between the subject and the background, the better the bokeh.

Bokeh is the _quality_ of the blur, not the _amount_ of blur. Think of it like a spice, not how hot it is, but what kind of hot.

Bokeh is most important when the elements of the background or foreground are _not_ completely blurred.

That's why you can still use a lens with bad bokeh as long as you take care to not have only slightly out-of-focus elements.

Here's another page with tests, and also some more definitive terms on the _characteristics_ of bokeh, not the amount of blur. http://www.rickdenney.com/bokeh_test.htm

Last week I finally got my hands on a lens that arguably I had been lusting for for years: The Sony (Minolta in spirit) 135mm f/2.8 T/4.5 Smooth Transition Focus.

Anyhoo, in an effort to save having to explain what's so special and unique about this lens to any member of tpmg that wonders why I am drunk with enthusiasm for this particular hunk of glass, I figured I'd post a link that summarizes it quite well:
http://www.magnuswedberg.com/index.php?doc=STF-review
and for an image comparison: http://artaphot.ch/index.php?option=com ... &Itemid=43

Of course this comes back to the underlying question of what makes good bokeh? Some articles:
http://www.vanwalree.com/optics/bokeh.html
http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/forum_posts ... 28088&PN=1
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/bokeh.htm

Hopefully by now we've established what good bokeh is. So the question I bring forth: what consideration do you give to bokeh in your creative work (either consciously or unconsciously), and what lens(es) do you use that bring the quality of your out of focus blur to the forefront of your images?

Chris

I think this thread should be resurrected. Did u have some 85mm (cream generator lens) bokeh compared with your 135mm?

Here is the bokeh of a long lens even at F5.6

Well, my newly arrived 85 G is arguably the second best bokeh lens in the Minolta arsenal (after the STF of course).

Compared to the STF, the 85/1.4 has much better IS when shooting film, not to mention actually having autofocus :D

Though faster lens gives excellent bokeh, here is an example where 5.6 still gives a pleasing image.

Exposure: 0.006 sec (1/160)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 300 mm
ISO Speed: 100

I am surprised about your clear-cut rating system even for such a subjective subject. I believe prof grade lenses are pretty difficult to be rated like that .

Likely these are the consensus in the Sony/Minolta camp? Any classic samples of both on bokeh?

Yup, that's pretty much the consensus, though I will admit the ZA 85 and ZA 135 are both gaining fans as time goes by.

Some very impressive shots there
I am a firm believer of image sample. The link that you mentioned is a good one ( allowing images only but prohibiting talk )

This is one at 135mm even at F5 with far background indeed

The 200mm f1.8L is one of the few Canon lenses that has some of the best bokeh in the Canon lineup.
